What is needed is a phone that will list the name of the person who's calling even if you don't have that person as a contact. So much easier to avoid sales people or telemarketers. I still get calls from them every once in awhile.

This truth reminded…

Horror Movie Lessons

horror-blog-jpg_192440 A couple weeks ago I was watching a horror movie (and may I digress for just a moment to say that horror movies don't really impress me much anymore? One has to be pretty darn good to be 'scary'.) and I thought about some of the lessons or truisms to be learned from these movies. I posted some of them on Facebook but later I wrote them down to post them on my blog. Plus, this would be a good…

A Wife's Ode to the Cocktail Hour

My husband and I had a lot of fun before we had kids. I mean A LOT. We traveled, we spent money like crack whores, we had nooners for heaven’s sake.

And we also loved going out for cocktails. We probably met at some swanky bar, or curious hell hole, or trendy hipster joint five days a week after work.

It was fun.

And least of all because we got a little…

What's good about crime? CrimeFest 2014

My panel appearance at CrimeFest 2014 was on Friday 15 May at 17.10 and the last panel of the day. Beforehand I spent some time catching up with some of my fellow crime writers and my publisher before taking tea and a delicious slice of Bara Brith Cake (Welsh fruit loaf) in the cafe in Bristol Library where I chatted to the librarians, delighted to hear that my crime novels are very popular with their readers.

After fortifying myself it was time to head for the Green Room in…

Crime writing from true crime

I am reading a true crime novel and wonder just how to get started doing that. To be successful you would have to interview  everyone identified with the case in any capacity as well as the family of the victim and family of the perpetrator. You would need to talk to the defense and to the prosecutor's office. You need to interview the accused.

How do you get people to cooperate? I don't suppose most would fully trust the writer to portray them as they see themselves. Most would not…
