Deadly Appraisal, Jane K. Cleland's second mystery, is a worthy sequel to the Agatha Award nominated Consigned to Death. Cleland's antiques appraiser, Josie Prescott, returns to find herself so deeply involved in a mystery that she doesn't know if she's a suspect or the target of a murder.

The Portsmouth Women's Guild is holding their successful Gala at Prescott's auction hall, but Josie was busy missing her boyfriend,…

What's happened to creativity?

I'm wondering what has happened to creativity in both movies and writing? It seems to me that there are plot ideas that are recycled uniquely and come across as different. Then there are CLONE ideas -- Da Vinci Code spin offs, re-made old movies with new characters, or rewritten books into modern day scripts for movies -- Shooter, the Point of Impact novel by Stephen Hunter brought up to date to feature the Gulf War, new era style sniper. It used to be I could go to movies or read books that…

Golf, greying and Gifting

A lazier start to the morning today. Feel I might have been coming down with something (pause for swooning ...) but have had a dose of Lemsip and feel much better, thank you. Played golf with Marian before lunch - the course was pleasantly empty in spite of the school holidays. And, pleasingly, the two lads that started behind us were actually slower than we were (rare in today's young male golfer, I have to say!) so we easily pulled ahead. Oh, and I got a par (a par!! Ye gods, the age of…

Some Unlikely PIs - Aliens, Neanderthals and Cats...oh my

Well, I thought I would dig out some old stuff I did featuring some

unlikely PIs. Today, the Stone Age PI and the Alien PI. Tomorrow, the

cat PI.

STONE, PI

Being a PI in 2010BC really sucked. Of course, we didn't call it

2010BC - we called it The Year The Woolly Mammoth Ate My Brother.

Things were slow at Stone investigations. That's me - Stone - so called

because when I was born, a Stone was the first thing I grasped. It

coulda been… Continue

Just back from Corsica

Spent a week in Corsica. Just back. Found Newt's invitation and decided to join crimespace. I might decide to add a few pictures I took. If anyone wants some beautiful pictures from Corsica, just contact me. :-)))

During the holidays, I bought a book by Francis Zamponi, a Corsican detective fiction writer, but I have not had the time to read it yet.

Crime

I was sound asleep up til about 12:45 a.m. when knocking on my bedroom door woke me. I opened it expecting it to be my daughter with a bad dream. Instead found two police men guns drawn and flashlights shining in my face who told me the back door was wide open and the house alarm was blaring. (The panel for that is in the kitchen and really can't be heard upstairs in the bedroom. A call will be placed shortly to remedy that. )

So I stumbled down stairs with them to see what was…

Follow-up to It's Friday--Any Good Movies?

So this little lady from Pasadena hauled herself over to the heart of Hollywood on Thursday night by herself for the opening night of the 8th annual Festival of Film Noir and man, it was fun.

It was held at the Egyptian Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard and I have to admit that I was a little confused in the beginning because there was a crowd of elderly Japanese people lined up outside. Turns out they were there for a new kamikaze movie being screened in an adjoining mini-theatre (I had…

Stalking Alifair Burke

Hear ye, hear ye. Please accept this as formal notification that I am Alifair Burke's official stalker. I do solemly swear to drop her name shamelessly at every opportunity (she can tell you that I once offered her my left arm--one of my more humiliating moments at Bouchercon in Chicago when I first met her at her signing--anyway), I will tirelessly follow her around the Internet and tell people that we are bosom buddies, that she adores me, and that she is every bit the talented writer that…

Random Thoughts on the Duke University Lacrosse Players, a Book Signing, the Da Vinci Code, and Writing to Your Audience.

I’ve been thinking about the long delayed exoneration of the four young white men from upper-class backgrounds who stood accused of having kidnapped and gang-raped a poor black exotic dancer. Accusations are flying, this time…

Location Discrimination

The crime in Canadian fiction far outweighs the reality and this country is just too ‘polite and civilized’ to be noir.

That’s what was stated in a recent post on a discussion list, and this is an expansion of my response to the statement there. In my opinion, for all the bellyaching we do about ‘realism’ in our crime fiction, when it comes to location we dispense with that concern. Time and again the tried and true locations of popular US cities are the settings of new novels,…

What. You don't think I'm sexy?

But enough about me.

Let's talk classic crime fiction recommendations.

  • RED DRAGON by Thomas Harris (A "must read".)

Counselling, virtual worlds and a wasp battle

Had to get up at a non-writers time today (ie before 9am - ye gods, how will I survive the length of the day?...) in order to get to my Counselling appointment this morning. We talked about families and church. So no change there then. But I have now got to the point when I realise that, for the moment, I'm not going to go back to St Peter's. And I'm not looking for another CofE church to replace them either. Hell, it feels like a decision, and it also feels as if I'm finally - at least in…

Ladykiller at Black Orchid, Sleuthfest

Larry Light and I signed our new book, LADYKILLER, at New York's legendary Black Orchid bookstore on April 11th. The champagne was flowing and they nearly sold out of books! We had a ball!

We'll also be touring Florida cities the week of April 15 ending up at Sleuthfest in Miami.

What SinC Can Do For You!

At a Sisters in Crime library event a couple of weeks ago, a woman

approached me and asked: "But what does Sisters in Crime DO for you?"

Fair enough question, so here goes. Twenty years ago, a small group of

women, most famously led by Sara Paretsky, realized there was a problem with

equitable treatment of women crime fiction writers. They decided to shine a

light on the issue and the SinC organization has been dedicated to that ever

since.

With our… Continue

Just Finished, Going to Pick Up

I just finished The Assassin's Gallery by David L. Robbins.

This is a book that I would have been highly unlikely to pick up if it hadn't been sent to my partner in amongst other review books. When I was restacking his review piles, I read the blurb and well, got caught. Great example of speculative fiction. For a full review you can wander over to my blog at http://tinyurl.com/38dkbt

Next I'm definitely getting stuck into Broken… Continue

Going the Distance

I’m getting pumped and limbered up for the big Noirathon at the Egyptian Theater After much waffling and indecision, I’ve decided to go for broke. I’m gonna attend every single screening. That’s a double bill every single night for two weeks. Twenty eight movies. Over fifty hours of Film Noir. That’s a lot of popcorn.

First up, ACT OF VIOLENCE and FORCE OF EVIL, plus a signing for LOS ANGELES NOIR, the… Continue

From Noir To Cosy In 12 Easy Stages

There is a wonderful array of crime fiction out there and it seems

there are noir fans and cozy fans and never the twain shall meet.

But how difficult would it be to turn a noir tale into a cozy, or vice

versa? Well, how about writing 12 different versions to ensure your new

novel appeals to the widest range of readers? Here are some handy hints.

A noir book is one that ends with all the characters dying/going to

prison/becoming alcoholics/betraying each… Continue
