Review - Sensitive New Age Spy, Geoff McGeachin

Maybe it's just me, but every now again I come across a fictional character that I'd like to meet.

Maybe.

Depends on how game I'm feeling I guess, but I think Alby might be one of those characters.

Of course, never for breakfast, and preferably somewhere there is a large, thick brick wall between us and the great unwashed. But still, he is the sort of bloke that you wouldn't mind having a glass of wine with

and oh, I don't know, explore why…

"911. What is your emergency?"

posted by Jeanne Munn Bracken

Reading Kate's blog about riding around on police patrols, I have been struck by the difference between a small city like Portland and a much smaller town like Littleton.Littleton_map

Every state probably has a Littleton, but if you're keeping track, I'm talking Massachusetts here.

We have a weekly newspaper called…

New Section

I need quotes from published authors for a new section on my website. I will be glad to put up your book info, and contact info(website etc) in exchange for a quote.

The idea is for new(aspiring and not so new and aspiring) authors to clip and tape these quotes to their monitors to keep them writing.

If you want to contribute you can send them to me at :

World Book Day - In Cold Daylight on the Top Ten List

I am absolutely thrilled to announce that IN COLD DAYLIGHT, has reached the shortlist of the Top Ten books for World Book Day, Spread the Word, The Book to Talk About 2008. In fact according to the BBC it came third. I would like to thank everyone who voted for it, and to those who took the time and trouble to leave a…

The Learning Curve...or Is That a Precipice?

Okay. I wrote a book. I found an agent. The agent found a publisher. The publisher released the book. We both dug for reviews and got some good ones. We offer the book in all the right places. Sounds like we've done it all, right?

I guess not. Now I'm supposed to become some sort of sales analyst and track where people are buying the book and how I reached those particular people. From that I should extrapolate a way to reach even more people and get them to buy the book. I'm told…

Fabulous as Always

Did you enjoy yourself at LIM? I don't know how you could not, from great panels to a crimescene program with two savvy police officers, great meals, master classes, evening entertainment, self defense tips and more!

Those of you who heard me speak know I did indeed talk up teen literature to anyone who would listen. I really enjoyed my young adult panel with Harriette Robinet and Kim Sullivan on Friday. Harriette is always so smart and interesting with her Edgar judging and school…

Please, Ms. Medical Examiner, It's Dark Here in the Morgue. Can You Turn on the Lights?

Posted by Kate Flora

When I was a much younger writer, I thought writers sat at their desks and made things up. I never realized how much research a writer—especially a mystery writer whose work is going fall under the coolly critical and educated eye of the passionate mystery fan—needed to do in order to get things right.

That was many years ago, back before I spent ten years in the unpublished writer's corner. Back before I made my first tentative phone call to set up…

Calgon, Take Me Away

Never having been one for long soaks in the bathtub, the old slogan never meant much to me except visions of pruny skin and a ring to clean afterward. But writing, now there's something that takes you away.

The world is often unkind, as many, many poets have said far better than I can. Things happen to us that might drive us crazy. But for some, writing becomes catharsis, therapy, and hiding place, all in one. Focus on your characters. Make their lives worse than yours if it makes you…

Review - Still Waters, Nigel McCrery

I have to admit - reading this book I saw Jack Halford crossed with Brian Lane whenever DCI Mark Lapslie appeared on the page. Alas for anybody not quite as addicted to New Tricks as I am that will mean
nothing, but for an interesting idea of a book - follow the link below
to a full review.

What's New for February

Hi, everyone. Over the weekend, I posted the February WHAT'S NEW page on my website http://www.davidmorrell.net. As promised, I have my personal review of the new RAMBO movie. It's been 36 years since FIRST BLOOD was published in 1972. The character's longevity amazes me. David

Turning Points

Exactly seven years ago, my husband Charlie and I set off on a safari

of Kenya and Tanzania to celebrate our 25th anniversary. We quickly

discovered that a trip in a safari vehicle--one with a top that comes

off so tourists can take pictures without getting eaten by animals--is

a kind of confinement. You're not allowed to walk around, you have to

have an iron bladder, and you'd better like your fellow passengers,

including the tse tse flies.

The first part… Continue

I saw 'There Will Be Blood' yesterday......

....was very underwhelmed. And what has that got to do with crime fiction? Everything has got to do with crime fiction except the things that turn out to let us down. Hamlet without a murder would have been a narrative with MacCaullay Culkin and Hannah Montana, and that would be a crime worse than the original, but of a different sort, which brings me back to the reason I climbed this soapbox. (Warning: spoilers ahead, except the film is so confused by it's own script it doesn't matter,…

Galley-ho!

Feb. 5,2008 & my galley is gone to print the proof!

I've decided that this is as close to child-birth as I'll get. The anxiety meter is tweeked.

My new saying is: "My pessimistic feet are firmly planted on the ground while my optimistic eyes look to the stars."

What I did for love, er research

Posted by Lorraine (L.L.) Bartlett

Saturday I arrived at the Craft Antique Co-Op and Grammy G's cafe to do some down-and-dirty research. See, in my next book one of my characters wants to open a lunchtime cafe. My friend Gail owns Grammy G's--a lunchtime cafe. So on Saturday I turned up to "observe" what goes on in such an establishment.

I arrived with big round eyes and ready to take on…

Back to the Billingtons

Yesterday vanished, swallowed up by writing a synopsis and taking some photographs. It's all progress I guess. Today I've drunk tea and eaten chocolate, both signs of a promising word count. I'm writing up the Hudson case still. That needs to be complete by the end of the sfternoon so here goes...

New praise on my web site

I can never resist talking about it when I get positive feedback from a reader. That’s why I want to introduce you to Shelbie Wells.

We met at a Borders book signing, as is so often the case for me. I always ask people who purchase one of my novels to send me a note when they've read it to tell me what they think. Well, this was one reader who was true to her word and sent me a very flattering note about Blood and Bone, the book…
