Australian Crime Fiction Snapshot: Jackie Tritt
Interview by Karen
1. Your book The Burning was released first as an e-book, which, I think, is a bit unusual in Australian Crime Fiction. What made you go down that sort of path?
Well, The Burning is actually having a second life as an e-book. It was originally published at the end of 1998, as a 2-in-1 Whodunnit, by Australian Pocket Press within a very limited market. Now it has been reworked for American readers…

When readers review my books I like to share the news. Today I'd like to introduce you to Ann Simon.
I met Ann at a writer's event last month in Washington DC. She was struggling to find chunks of time to write. I suggested that instead she commit to doing some writing every day. She later e-mailed me to confirm that not only was she able to find time to write two pages every day, but that she felt energized because she could see she was making progress.
She also made time…

Louise Penny at The Poisoned Pen
Last night, I went to see Louise Penny at The Poisoned Pen. Louise is just as kind as her character, Chief Inspector Armand Gamache. She's warm and personable. Before the formal introduction, Louise went around to the audience, introduced herself, and spoke to each person. And, funny! She has a witty sense of humor, with no unkindness. The audience appreciated her warmth and style. With only one teen in the audience, Louise started by asking her age,…

Whew! I've been busy! Presently, I'm working on three independent comic book series, some pitches for big companies and my crime novel from late last year. So, LOTS going on! :)

Sorry for the absence. Just haven't really had time to read anything crimeish lately - been focusing on porn and erotica for a book (or actually two; I have an anthology of vintage Finnish porn writing coming out).
I'm translating one of the most important debuts in American crime writing in Finnish, though. I'll be posting about this soon in every venue I can think of, but now it's still very much hush-hush.
As for films, I watched Plunder of the Sun by John Farrow from a…

I recently received my author's copies of my book, Chasin' the Wind. Remember, this is my first published book and I cherished that first moment, when I pulled the book, dust jacket and all, from the box and gave it the once-over. There I was, on the inside flap, smiling back at me!
I also, did my first radio interview as a published writer that morning and, if you are interested, you can go to my website and listen to it - www.michaelhaskins.net - I couldn't figure out how to link it to…

Yes, today I'm signing my novels at the Borders in Sterling, VA from 11 am to 3 pm. BUT, not to short-change my friends in Maryland, I'll spend tomorrow at The
Hard Bean Coffee & Booksellers. This will be a nice reunion, because the Hard Bean was one of the very first bookstores to welcome me for a signing. In addition to great books, you can also get a great cup of coffee if you stop in at 36 Market Space, Annapolis, MD. I'll be there signing from…

I've created a group, Mysteryballers, on Yahoo Tournament Pick'em so that mystery writers and readers can compete in selecting the winners of the NCAA college basketball tournament, which will be starting next week. If you're interested in participating, go to yahoo and click on Tournament Pick'em (it may be under Sports). Chose Mysteryballers (our group ID# is 58439 and the password is Sherlock). I just joined goodreads, a forum for readers that is pretty cool. As such sites do, they asked me to list some authors who inspire me. That list is too long to cover, but I thought I'd blog today on the reasons for the inspiration that some authors have provided me.
I always start with Shakespeare, not because I'm trying to be cool, but because over thirty years in education I found that no one answers all the demands of writing any better than he did. To get inside a character's…

I don't do this very often but, okay, here it is. My publisher is having a contest among us authors. The winner will be whoever sells the most on Amazon.com between now and the end of March. SO if you're the holdout who hasn't ordered their copy of
Blood and Bone yet, now's the time.
In BLOOD AND BONE, an 18 year-old boy lies dying of…

Yesterday I wrote about characters, and today I promised dialogue help. I've counseled before in this blog about reading aloud, and I still think it's the best way to tell if your dialogue is good. You should "hear" your characters speaking in your mind, and each voice should be unique and compelling.
A character has to have a pattern, sound, and syntax that rings true to his or her social station. Shakespeare is a great example (but when is he not?). Look at the difference in…

For those that don’t know me, and those that are getting to know me, my family is the one thing in my life that means everything. Of course, my wife and kids are precious, but my extended family is the source of who I am and how I look at life in general. My Uncle Bob, my Dad’s brother, recently sent me an Email and link I would like to share with everyone. As a "day job", I am a physical therapist in a nursing home. I am honored and priveleged everyday to work with some of the finest…

I have not let moss grow under my feet since my acceptance for publication at Enspiren Press. Although having Avenging Angel accepted has meant as much to me as the birth of my children (so you know it means a TON), I know that I must continue to evolve and grow and feed the hunger of the masses of fans that I am accumulating.
So I am proud to announce the soon-to-be released short story, THE MASK, will be out in the Spring issue of http://www.mouthfullofbullets.com- Mouthfull of…

I don't know about you guys, but I am looking forward to Laurell K. Hamilton's 16th installment in her Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series! This one is focused on Jason, the cute, sexy and sassy werewolf! Can a guy be sassy? Hmmm.... How about, wiseguy? Yeah, that works better.…

(I did post a photo and it is supposed to be here! To see it, go to www.chasinthewind.blogspot.com.)
Celine and I left Key West at 5 a.m. on Feb. 29, and arrived at the Deerfield Beach Hilton at 9:30 a.m. I missed the 9 a.m. panel, but got there in time for “The Devil Made Me Do It” panel, with Bob Morris, Don Bruns, and Philip Cioffari. The panel discussed the whys of evil doings in their characters. Or why sometimes good characters have…
