But the Idea Gets Across
Rythme, ryhmn, broken time,
I write as rough as the edge of a dime.
Thoughts, themes, ideas, schemes,
I've got plenty of them, in my dreams....
Smoothness? Yes, sir!
I will try,
But like the dime,
That's rough on edge,
My works pass on in time,
And they act as though a wedge.
Place them in their right spots,
And watch them open your thoughts.
Read them when…

This week has flown by and, I have to admit, I’ve hardly spent any time on book-related stuff. Instead, I’ve been having lots of quality mother-daughter time with my 2yro. Had a lovely visit to the
Collingwood Children’s Farm today…but you probably don’t want to hear about the delight on my little girl’s face as she held a guinea pig and patted baby goats (yes, I know they’re called kids, but saying kids might have been…

INVISIBLE TO THE EYE
The eye reveals many wonders that are real
Our feelings react when absorbed by light
The heart and soul gains feeling and insight
Our mind is bombarded with a rainbow of colors
We ewww and ahhh at the beauty of creation
Filled with beauty, which lifts our elation
The ugly and bad is there
Reminds us, cast’s on despair
Greed, lust, anger are conveyed
The downside of man displayed
But seek ye the invisible…

He may not be a crime writer, but ...
I've recently reread Thomas Hardy's
Jude the Obscure, which overall is a grim, depressing and tiresome novel. But one scene that impressed me was the pig-killing episode early in the book. Hardy isn't really noted as a writer about violence but I found this more powerful than many supposedly shocking scenes in novels of our own day. It occurs early in the novel when Jude and his…

After reading
this article in The Village Voice (warning—lots of f-bombs), I got to thinking. Well, first I was laughing, then I got to thinking. Mostly about how dumb some people are, and then about how incredibly valid this point is: have respect for the years it takes to hone a craft, whether it’s painting, writing, or editing, whatever.
For this Friday link post, I thought I would…

As if my plate isn't full enough at the moment, my agent seems to have started offering my literary thriller again, because here are two rejections. One says "nicely written" but rejects because "our readers" aren't terribly interested in Prussia. The setting of the novel is 18th century Germany. Prussia is only involved because the novel begins at Freiberg (Saxony!) with the final battle of the Seven-Years war. This was won by Frederick of Prussia. The rest takes place near Lake Constance and…

Ch. 2
Doolin`s gang stopped at a wide stream to water their steeds. The horses’ lips were dipped in the cool water satisfying their thirst acquired from the train heist. From the rise in the landscape the posse anxiously waited for the Sheriff`s signal. He raised his hand and signaled his posse into action. With guns drawn the galloping posse closed the distance quickly pouncing on their adversary.
The drinking horses were the first to sense the attack. Several horses` raised their…

Just signed with Shadow LIne Press contracts to have them bring out 'Death of a Young Lieutenant.'
Nope, no up-front money. But some nice royalty percentages if the thing sells. Haven't heard exactly when it'll come out. Sometime before 2050, I'm sure. I've got book two of the series more or less done. Yeah, I'm a little pumped over this.

Yesterday I melded MACBETH and WE HAVE ALWAYS LIVED AT THE CASTLE. How about this one:
Teaser: His body disfigured, his purpose unknown, he came toward the town. Was he back for vengeance?
For help? Or did his red skin signal a need for...blood?
Coming soon: The Return of the Count

MORAL DILEMMA QUERY
This is a fast forward to chapter 18 of the story Moral Dilemma. In a nutshell in order to set up this chapter I will reveal bit of the preceding chapters. My hope is to get feedback on this chapter and the main plot of Moral Dilemma.
Jack meets a detective who has clairvoyant episodes. They always occur when a serial killer is in the act of killing his next victim. Often the serial killer hasn’t been discovered by law enforcement. The detective makes a…

Dreaded writer’s block. Your muse has left you for another writer, the empty computer screen mocks you every day with it’s silent emptiness. Horrible, huh? Well, I have a confession to make. I know nothing about it, because it’s never happened to me. I’ve gotten too busy to write, or distracted with other things, or just been too out of it to get anything accomplished. But days on end where I can’t write anything? Nope. So here are a few suggestions to help on those days where your current WIP…

(Also posted on
One Bite at a Time.)
I’m about halfway through Scott Phillips’s excellent novel,
Cottonwood. I’ve liked everything about the book from Page 1, but for one thing: the back cover.
I rarely look at the back covers or jacket notes on books I’ve already decided I want to read. I don’t need any teasers or endorsements; I already know I want to read the book, either because of author recognition or…
