Animals Are Crazy, Too

I thought I'd finish out the week with animal stories, having been reminded by the porcupines of yesterday. Nothing to do with writing except that walking is my inspiration time each day.

Story #1 happened last summer. MId-morning I walk to the end of our property, about half a mile, cross a small woods, and return home. It's pretty much the same route every day, and that doesn't bother me in the least. There's always something new to see.

On a particular day, I heard the sound…

An Open Letter to the World, From Your Local Librarian

posted by Jeanne Munn Bracken

Dear library user,

Your local librarians are delighted to welcome you to the library. We are happy to help you find whatever you need (except for you porn surfers--you know who you are). There are, alas, some limitations to what we can do for you. Most of those limitations involve computers. As for the rest, well, we're talking humans here...

First, I have to point out that those of us in middle age were trained in the Dark Ages when…

On going far enough after it's gone too far

Bellekachinatitle This should be a blog about Belle Cardigan's triumphant return to the show ring--about how although she's not even on fully normal activities around the house just yet, she nonetheless went out to a dog show this past weekend, competed in rally and obedience, and earned Qs in all four classes--with two red ribbons on Saturday and two blues on Sunday. She came home…

Nature, Human and Otherwise

Yesterday I was angry at the world, as readers may have noticed. Today, although most of the same problems exist, I have a better attitude for three reasons.

First, I got a request for a complete from a publisher for my MS, Her Highness' First Murder. Few writers fail to be cheered by someone in the pub biz saying, "This is good. We'd like more." The nature of publishing today being what it is, that's a HUGE step forward.

Second, I spent an evening with some great…

Librarians: An Author's Best Friends

Posted by Lorraine (L.L.) Bartlett

Last week I attended the New York Library Association's annual conference, this year held in Buffalo, NY. Since MURDER ON THE MIND takes place in Buffalo, it felt good to reconnect with the setting of my book. And I met a lot of wonderful librarians who seemed truly interested in my work.

I was there as part of the Mystery Writers of America's New York chapter. My "appearance" was at the second-annual "Author Garden." The authors…

The Other Side-Internet Jerks

Yesterday I posted on Internet angels, those people who post, create, and otherwise assist others, making valuable information available to the masses who don't know much more than how to type in a keyword or two.

Since the universe loves balance, on the day that I lauded such angels, I collided with a person of the opposite type. Having had the nerve to ask a question on-line, I was subjected to name-calling, intimidation, and downright meanness, all delivered in a tone of hauteur…

Character Assassination

Dumbledore is gay and I'm annoyed as hell.

I have to admit I haven't read one page of one Harry Potter book. I've bought 'em all and my kids love them. I've seen some of the movies and even bought the damn DVDs. One year we went to a Harry Potter party with my kids dressed as Hermoine and Harry--complete with capes wand and a pair of busted glasses. Even Mama went in costume though I'd be hard pressed to tell you exactly what I was.

I tell you this so you know I don't mind… Continue

Cozy mysteries and Sex! Violence! Chicks Gone Wild!

I have a confession to make.

When I started writing DYING TO BE THIN, the first installment in the Fat City Mystery series, I was not fully aware that the mystery sub-genre known as “cozies” had to follow certain restrictive guidelines. With some glaring exceptions, most cozies are written according to the following rules:

• They have “kinder, gentler” story lines.

• There is…

Does the Author's opinion matter?

So Rowling outed Dumbledore. This post isn't really about that though.

This post asks the question; does the author's opinion matter any more than anyone else's once the story is out?

Since the last book has been written, there is only the written evidence to go by. If Rowling thought of Dumbledore as gay while she wrote the stories, that's fine, but hardly relevant. I think the real issue is, if the reader thinks of him a gay, then he is. If not, then he's not. The…

Zen Sarcasm

I got this little list in an unattributed e-mail from my friend Brian Darovic. It seems to be making the e-mail rounds, but I thought a couple were funny, so I'll list them here. Put yourself in Zen mode.

Zen Sarcasm

1. Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me either. Just pretty much leave me the hell alone.

2. The journey of a thousand miles…

New Projects include Western Mystery Anthology

The Curse of Senmut, set in Egypt, is in the editing phase and should be out soon. In addition, Loretta and I have just completed an anthology of short stories. In this anthology, Jeff McQuede, a modern day sheriff with old-time values makes his debut. Possibly, a full-length book will follow. We are seeking a publisher for this anthology.

Book Covers

Wow! Just saw the artwork of the cover of my latest book (out in March, 2008). Not only did my publisher take my suggestions and use the artwork I suggested; they made it better.

Check it out on my page. Tell me what you think.

Thanks, Mike

Internet Angels

Did you ever wonder who does all the cool stuff on the Internet that makes it so much fun? I do.

I know a few names. Daniel Arenson, the author of a fantasy novel called FIREFLY ISLAND, helps other Five Star authors by posting their info on the MySpace Five Star site, with a cool revolving thingie that shows each author's latest cover every few minutes. Now I could never do that in a million years (well, maybe I could, but it's kind of like the monkeys with the typewriter…

Let There Be Light

Posted by Sheila Connolly

Since I live in Massachusetts and love old things, for the past few years I have gone to the Brimfield Antique Show, which bills itself as the largest outdoor antique show in the country. I'll believe it–three times a year hundreds of vendors take over an entire town and spread over acres. If you can't find the weird antique item you're looking for there, it probably doesn't exist.

When I go, I try to have a plan–a list of things I'm…

News & Thank You's

Hello friends and fellow crime/suspense lovers!

It's been far too long since I've been in the neighborhood-- so long I feel more like a newbie, than an old foggie. :)

I have missed hanging out in this thriving community, reading lots of great books and meeting wonderful people. I just wanted to let everyone know that I'm back and I look forward to getting back into the swing of things... Slowly but surely things are…

Book Proposals

Just sent off two book proposals to my publishers. If accepted, they’ll provide the starting points for the next two Poke Rafferty novels.

I hate writing book proposals. What publishers usually want is a synopsis of the plot, and at this stage I have no idea whatsoever what the plot of either book is going to be.

Plotting is something I let my characters do, so to speak. I come up

with a situation that needs to be…
