I already told you that tonight I sign books at Borders at 8518 Fenton St., Silver Spring, MD from 5 pm to 9
pm.
I'll spend Saturday afternoon at Ukazoo Books and this time I won't be alone. Eight of us, contributors to "New Lines from the Old Line State: An Anthology of Maryland Writers" will share a reading from 2 pm to 4 pm. Ukazoo is at 730 Dulaney Valley Rd., Towson, MD. If you're near there, this is your chance to support Maryland's writers and their association. Others…

It's only days until Christmas and I've been laid up with bursitis in my hip (which is greatly aggravated by sitting for periods of time), and here is this fat package on my doorstep like some last minute present. Alas, it proves to be work with a deadline attached. I have said elsewhere, I think, that I enjoy the editing process except for proofreading the galleys. Now the fat stack of pages sits on my desk, making me nervous. All deadlines make me nervous. I have a type A…

The more I learn about a time period, the more I want to know but the less I want to visit. Using powdered rabbit head for tooth cleaning doesn't appeal to me, but for the Tudors it was either that or honey.
I'll stick to minty-flavored chemicals.
More than the day-to-day oddities, I'd object to the overall likelihood of pain and death at an early age. The government, the entity formed to care for its people, could brand, maim, imprison, or even kill a person pretty much at the…

With just a few days to go to Christmas I'm delighted to report that, after achieving number one positions in the Jack the Ripper (Thriller) rankings at both Amazon UK, and Amazon.com(USA), my novel 'A Study in Red - The Secret Journal of Jack the Ripper has just achieved the same position in the rankings at Amazon.ca (Canada). Although there are far fewer books in the category at the…

It's another full weekend as I try to help everyone in the area find one of my novels in their stocking. Friday evening I stop into Borders Books in Silver Spring, MD for a book signing from 5 pm to 9 pm. It's one of the larger stores I've had good luck in, so visit me there, at 8518 Fenton Street, to see why.

You're whirring along at a good clip, the story is playing out in your mind just ahead of your fingers on the keyboard. Events happen that need to happen, and people act out their fictional lives at your command. Suddenly, you realize that you don't know if Character A could have done as he did. There will have to be research, and the question is, do you do it now, or do you mark that passage and come back to it?
Can't give a definite answer, because I'm of two minds. Sometimes I…

It's been a busy month and not just because of Christmas! Here's what's been going on in my world:
1. My daughter celebrated her 2nd birthday - very exciting!
2. I've been looking for a new venue for the annual book launch hubby and I host for our family and friends. I've finally found the venue but now I'm organising invitations. It's hard to believe it's only 6 weeks until book 4,
The Killing Hands, comes out in Australia and New Zealand.
3. I'm getting my website…

I happened to catch a television rerun the other day of the terrific 1967 movie “In The Heat of the Night” starring Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger. The film won five Oscars including Best Picture, Best Screenplay and Best Actor (Steiger). Poitier plays Virgil Tibbs, a black Homicide Detective from Philadelphia who becomes involved in a murder investigation in a racist small town in Mississippi. It got me thinking about other outstanding detective movies I’ve seen (as opposed to crime or mystery…

Starting into this Holiday Season, I get a chance to reminisce how it use to be. We had all our children with us, we never even gave it a thought that we would be torn away from one of our children.
Sometimes we try to blank out the hurtful things in our lives that cause us pain and reject the very things that can give us comfort.
It is never easy to say goodbye to someone you love, especially when their essence is still overwhelming when you look at your door and can visualize them…

This morning, long before the sun rise, I travelled to the BBC studios in Southampton for the Radio Solent Christmas Breakfast Party to celebrate BBC Radio Solent's 100 Lives Project.
BBC Radio Solent's 100 Lives project offers a snapshot of life in the 21st century by following the lives of 100 people over the year. I was chosen as one of the 100 Lives because I live in the Solent area and my marine mystery crime novels featuring Inspector…

I often like to use this blog to point you to an interesting website. Almost always it's mystery-related, but to prove I'm an equal opportunity lover of literature, today I'll talk about a romance site. Specifically,
"Virginia is for Romance Lovers."
Aside from the cool name, a play on my state motto, this site features the musings of half a dozen authors who apply the definition of…

Working Stiffs)
As some of you already know, I spent five years as an EMT on the local ambulance service. I have had fantasies of being a cop. But there is not enough money in the world to make me want to be a firefighter.
It’s not that I don’t admire them. Quite the opposite. I think guys who charge into a burning building to rescue people and pets are the biggest…

The problem with living is that you learn some things as you go, but new questions keep popping up. You understand the playoff process that leads to the Superbowl, but you can't understand why some perfectly good teams can't get there. You learn the basics of healthy living but can't explain why some people who ignore them completely seem to do just fine. And if you're an educator (or maybe a parent), you learn that you may control a child's behavior but you can't change the way he…
