It was a pleasure to meet some existing readers and introduce my crime novels to new readers at the Isle of Wight Arts Festival at
Ventnor on Sunday, and what a gorgeous day it was too, wall-to-wall sunshine with people flocking to the little beach in the small bay. I was just glad that some visitors managed to tear themselves away from the beach and the sunshine to…

I'm often asked if I have a writing routine. There are a writers who write the same time every day come what may; others will write a certain number of words every day and say, 'when I've done my quota, I'll knock off writing.' Me? I have no real set routine and I don't count the number of words. Some days the words will flow and I can spend up to eight hours, maybe more writing. Other days I will struggle to find the correct words. If the latter happens I will usually pick up my…

I've started planning the next
DI Andy Horton marine mystery crime novel, number eight in the series, which is set against the backdrop of the sea on the South Coast of England. How much planning is required when structuring a crime novel?
The answer to that question varies with the author. Some crime writers spend a very long time at the planning stage, up to a…

I've enjoyed writing and undertaking many speaking engagements and media appearances throughout the year. I've met some fascinating people and made lots of new friends. As 2010 draws to a close I thought it appropriate to thank my many readers, my publishers, booksellers, agents, those who have supported me in the book trade and the media, and in the libraries across the UK, the Commonwealth and the USA.
Here is a quick round up and some of the highlights of 2010 which…

Most authors would love to see their books sold in supermarkets because that usually means increased sales. But there's not a lot of space for books in supermarkets and it costs the publisher vast amounts of money to get what shelf space there is, so only the top names (or potential top names) are carried and promoted. But now all is revealed on how to crack this particular nut and it comes straight from the mouth of the key book buyer in one of the major supermarkets in the UK -…

I received the large print edition of
The Suffocating Sea, the third in the DI Andy Horton series of marine mystery crime novels last week, and it looks good. This will now be on sale on line or to order through bookshops, and also available on loan through libraries. In addition,
The Suffocating Sea is available as a talking book, which can be bought as a…

I was delighted to be asked to the Mayor of Havant’s reception and the grand opening of the newly refurbished arts and heritage centre in Havant, Hampshire, called The Spring, on 2 October.
The mayor of Havant, Jackie Branson, was entertaining all the mayors from around Hampshire and the Isle of Wight – twenty two of them I believe. It is a tradition that each mayor takes it in turn annually to host an event and to give a small gift to…

My radio phone in interview with Alex Dyke on Wight FM on 16 April was lots of fun. It was great to talk to people via a phone-in and to answer questions they’d e mailed in regarding my novels and how I write. I'd love to do more radio phone-ins so hope I can link in with other radio stations on this soon.
I was also delighted to find that the Captain sailing the Wightlink ferry from Portsmouth to Fishbourne, on my way over to the Isle of Wight…

I’ve just received from my publisher my copies of the Large Print version of Deadly Waters, which is now on sale. It looks really good and I hope it enables people who are visually impaired (sadly a growing number) to enjoy this marine mystery crime novel.
Deadly Waters is already available as a talking book and in hardback and trade paperback and will shortly be published as a mass market paperback in the UK with a new jacket cover in April…

I have set my Marine Mystery crime novels on the south coast of England where the sea becomes the backdrop to murder, treachery, deceit, betrayal, evil and revenge. They feature the flawed and rugged detective DI Andy Horton. He’s tough as a container ship, having dredged through the sludge of life's sewerage, since childhood. Abandoned by his mother when he was ten, with no knowledge of his father , Horton turns from battling with crime on the…

It’s hectic on the writing front at the moment with time off for a quick photoshoot for a newspaper. I am currently writing the fifth DI Horton Marine Mystery, as well as revising three of my business books which are set for publication in May 2009. The fourth DI Horton Marine Mystery is currently with my publisher and I am keeping my fingers crossed that they don’t want too many revisions. My new author web site is being developed and that always…
