UNCONVENTIONAL CONVENTIONS

Mystery conventions have to be some of the wackiest, most creative and high energy get-togethers around, Comic Con not withstanding (if you can stand a hundred Darth Vadersroaming around).

Years ago, when I was starting out in the mystery field, a small conference called Bare Bones took place in the hills above Escondido in a church camp near the town of Julian. We stayed in cabins, ate…

Magna cum Murder, 2010

Good to go; good to come home. Magna was fun, well-organized, and good for networking with both authors and fans. I've put some pictures up at Criminal Minds: http://criminalmindsatwork.blogspot.com. Enjoy!

Packing for Magna--with Very Little Method

I've tried being organized, laying out things a week in advance in order to not be last minute about what I will take to a con. It never works.

Whatever I've laid out, a week, a day, or even half a day before will become my most hated items of apparel when the time comes to actually put them into a suitcase. "What was I thinking? Those pants make me look a mile wide!" "And that necklace never hangs right." "Those shoes are sure to hurt after an hour."

Better to wait until an hour… Continue

Chapter One of 'Beyond Reasonable Doubt' by Dennis Gelbaum

Each Monday, for the next five Mondays, I will be posting a chapter from my novel, 'Beyond Reasonable Doubt'. I look forward to reading your comments.

CHAPTER 1

I was sitting at my desk, relaxing, daydreaming, and looking out the window. Our neighbor's always annoying, white and brown cat had just passed by, not a care in the world. She acted like she owned the place. Three squirrels were looking for food. The fat one came up to the window and stared at me. I stared…

Mystery at Comic Con

Lots of crime writing related activities at Wizard World Comic Con in Rosemont, Illinois over the weekend. Was treated royally by Jon Jordan and the folks in the Crime Spree Magazine area. They are always promoting writers and fun, too. I was hoping to see Raymond Benson's smiling face, but unfortunately only got to see his posterior side as he disappeared into the crushing throng. Giving chase was futile, blocked as I was by storm troopers and autograph hounds alike. Back at the booth, it was… Continue
