Just got word that an interview I did at Magna Cum Murder last year is up on YouTube. You just type in "Peg Herring," and there I am, talking with a very gracious host who asked all the right questions. It's very nice. Well, actually, it's a little creepy.
Writers are not known for being spotlight-seekers, with of course some notable exceptions. Most of us would prefer to sit before our magic boxes and talk to ourselves. I like doing my presentations, of course. I'm in control, and…

Review by Aaron Paul Lazar
A great read doesn't have to be fancy, full of literary allusions or deep musings. Nor does it need a ritzy setting, plots that twist your brain into a pretzel, or elite protagonists.
What a great read does need is a story that moves, characters who linger in your mind, and a voice that calls you back to its pages. Avenging Angel by Kim Smith accomplished all three.
Smith has written a suspenseful cozy mystery set in the south in a…

I forgot to mention that anyone can go to
HewittsBooks and open a FREE PDF file with the first chapter of
The Dead Guy.
Why not give it a quick read? It's a short chapter, and if it doesn't hook you, fine. But you might find that you need to read on ...
Thanks!

FRESH FROZEN is a HOT READ!
by Laine Estep
December 29, 2008, 10:18 AM EST
FRESH FROZEN by Darden North, MD, is easily one of the best books I have ever read. The twists are expertly crafted, the characters are believable and the plot is enthralling! I love a book where the author takes me to uncharted territory, and Dr. North does just that! In
FRESH FROZEN, the reader is taken into the territory surrounding infertility and the measures some…

2009 promises to be a busy year for me with seven of my books being published and some talks and events already lined up. But first, as it is the New Year, it's a good time to reflect on what has gone before and then to set objectives and look forward to events in 2009. So here goes:
Looking back at 2008
In Cold Daylight, my thriller featuring Adam Greene, reached the top ten shortlist for the World Book Day Prize 2008 and came sixth in an on line…

I've got a million of 'em. News stories, friends' anecdotes, observed oddities, all form possible stories in my head. The next step is to try to write them down, and here I'm successful about a third of the time. It's heartening to know that big authors struggle with the same problem: Michener did all the notes for IBERIA decades before he actually wrote the book, and authors like Martha Grimes express frustration that they have other ideas they'd like to work on while their agent/editor/public…

I'd like to talk with you about hosting an interesting author guest on your site. In return, we would promote your blog as part of the tour. Some of the options include:
1 - Send interview questions for the author to answer (related to his book or writing).
2 - Hosts may require a guest post - about their book, writing, the background or a topic in the book.
3 - Post an excerpt from the book.
4 – If you have another idea, let me know. I love promoting – outside the…

Not often a factor analyzed by the national media as it dooms the national and global economy, book signings may be holding their own --- at least around here. Even as my third novel,
FRESH FROZEN, was enjoying an October 2008 book release just as the economy was really tanking (not a cause and effect relationship, I’m sure), I along with hoards of other authors and publicists was busy. The goal was to line up and confirm appearances at…

I just finished three book signings in less than four weeks and I learned a lot about the buying public, readers, and how the current economic crisis is affecting book sales.
But first, let me tell you about meeting Patti Stegal, (see photo) the daughter of my friend Sue Harrison. Patti was in town from Illinois, where she’s a teacher. Sue bought her a copy of “Chasin’ the Wind” when it first came out, as a gift and after…

Veil of Lies; A Medieval Noir is out! And more importantly, we are partying. If you are in the LA area, stop by tomorrow, Saturday, November 8th at 4pm to Vroman's Bookstore in Pasadena, 695 E. Colorado Blvd. There will be sword-fighting knights on the sidewalk in front, medieval fare inside, a harpist, goodie bags, champagne, and good times. Oh yeah. And books! It's open to all so come on down!

Would you like to be a tour host for one day? There are openings available and we would be happy to speak with you about the possibilities. Its very easy to be a host if you have a blog, radio show, newsletter etc. -- You can still be involved in these tours, but they are filling up fast. There are so many great tours that I should probably mention that you can host more than one tour :)

Since I started this publishing thing, it seems like I'm always asking people for something, which is my least favorite thing in the world (well, at least in the bottom ten, along with colonoscopies and people who cut me off on the freeway). Raised to be a rugged individualist, I have a natural aversion to asking for favors, yet I have to ask media people to cover my "events," ask publishers to take a look at my writing, and book lovers to buy my books. So I can't help but wonder when it turns…

Okay, I'm not very little, and I'm not that old. But I've got the bag thing covered.
My presentations have become more varied as time passes. Libraries and groups that liked the Mystery Talk want me to return, but I can't keep doing the same speech over and over. I expand my topics periodically, but new libraries and groups may still want the original speech. In order to deal with the "which speech am I getting ready for" problem, I have developed the Bag System. For each new topic I…

The Society of Authors meeting in London on Monday was fascinating for many reasons: the venue, the characters in the audience, the panel and what they said. I’ve picked out some quotes from the panel of experts (a publisher, an agent and a book wholesaler) and thought I’d let you decide who said what with the offer of a FREE signed edition of one of my novels if you guess correctly. But first a little more about the event.
The

In another post from my "real blog", http://bethgroundwater.blogspot.com/ , here's some advice on additional types of promo an author can do besides bookstore signings:
During my chat stint in the EONS Book Gallery Meet The Authors event, a fellow author asked for book promotion suggestions other than signings. I realized that my reply might help other authors, so I decided to copy it here:
There are lots of ways to use the Internet to promote books, as evidenced by this…

Because my friends live all over the world, I knew only a handful would be able to attend my book launch no matter where it was held. So I decided to recreate the traditional launch party experience on the Web.
Entertainment for the October 1-3, 2008 event includes video welcomes from David Morrell, Gayle Lynds, James Rollins, and Douglas Preston, a reading by a professional voice actress who's also a New York Times author, standup comedy from one of my author friends - even…
