Thursday evening, my hubby and I joined 28 other stalwart sleuths from the Rocky Mountain chapter of Mystery Writers of America for our holiday party at the Adams Mystery Playhouse, complete with dinner and a mystery play (http://www.adamsmysteryplayhouse.com/). The play was "Death for Dinner." It included a police detective who sounded like a cross between Borat and Inspector Clouseau and who had the audience in stitches with his impromptu asides. Our table was one of three who correctly…

I've been invited to BBC Radio Solent's On Air Christmas Party on 17 December 2008. It's part of the
BBC's 100 Lives Project and I am one of the "lives!"
BBC Radio Solent's 100 Lives project offers a snapshot of life in the 21st century by following the lives of 100 people over the year. I was privileged and pleased to be chosen as one of those…

Sorry for the blatant self-promotion, but I'm celebrating the publication of my latest Benjamin Justice mystery,
SPIDER SEASON, which goes on sale today from St. Martin's Minotaur.
SPIDER SEASON is the eighth novel in the series, which has won an Edgar and three Lambda Literary Awards. It's on the dark and character-driven side, for more adventurous readers one might say. If you'd like to read the first chapter, go to the link on the home page of my web site:…

Not often a factor analyzed by the national media as it dooms the national and global economy, book signings may be holding their own --- at least around here. Even as my third novel,
FRESH FROZEN, was enjoying an October 2008 book release just as the economy was really tanking (not a cause and effect relationship, I’m sure), I along with hoards of other authors and publicists was busy. The goal was to line up and confirm appearances at…

Book review written by Denise Grones
Fresh Frozen by Darden North, Ponder House Press
Where else do you find a handsome, young doctor, a gorgeous socialite, a thief, a flamboyant personal shopper and a grisly murder plot? All in a Darden North novel, of course. North, a Cleveland native and practicing obstetrician and gynecologist in Jackson, has just released his third medical…

My website guru, my handsome husband, has made quite a few tweaks to my author website (bethgroundwater.com) in preparation for promoting the release of To Hell in a Handbasket next year. The covers of both A Real Basket Case and To Hell in a Handbasket now appear on the Books page and you can click on either one to go to its individual book page complete with reviews, excerpts, etc. Also, we’ve updated my Frequently Asked Questions page and made some minor updates on just about every page of…

In Cold Daylight was published in Poland today. Renamed Fire And Water ( Ogien i Woda) this is the second of my marine mystery crime novels to be published in Polish. It is always very exciting to see your work translated into another language and I was also thrilled to receive an e mail from Polish journalist, Anna Kutrzuba, who interviewed me for an article on the book's release. She's written a lovely piece and the article is laid out…

I've decided to make the digital version of Darkness and the Devil Behind Me available for free. It's only available through my website. It will stay free through the Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's holidays. After that, I'm not sure. But for now, it's available for anyone who wants it.

What's good enough for Dan Brown and Random House is good enough for me. Random House US is launching a major advertising campaign in the USA on 23 November, with Dan Brown and other notables from the world of fiction, showing consumers that books make an ideal Christmas present. So, in my own little way I thought I'd beat the drum for the UK.
According to a survey in the UK by Deloitte, (one of my former employers by the way) books are desired…

Little did I know when I embarked on this new career as a writer how much of my time would be spent on tasks OTHER than writing. This past week I did the following:
- Contacted a bookstore to determine the status of my payment for consignment books, then deposited the check when it arrived,
- Mailed a copy of
A Real Basket Case to a Japanese publisher interested evaluating it for publication in Japan,
- Participated in a 20-author library signing event,
-…

It's the subject of movies, TV shows, and family humor: the things that some of us have to do the way we like to do them. My kids hated playing Scrabble with me because I can't stand it if the tile isn't exactly inside its little square. A friend at work was visibly upset if one of us sat in a different position at the lunch table. And before computer-generated papers I've seen students copy and recopy an assignment until it met their standards, even if there was only one small…

Really. I mean, the woman started reading me Edgar Allen Poe when I was still too short to reach the kitchen faucet and get my own drink of water. She would often appear in our bedroom doorway with a book and share a snippet of poetry or prose that had grabbed her imagination, and it was usually something spooky. She talked about words and the usage of words, why things were better said this way than that. And she put into my hands at about age thirteen the most unlikely of English teacher…

Veil of Lies; A Medieval Noir is out! And more importantly, we are partying. If you are in the LA area, stop by tomorrow, Saturday, November 8th at 4pm to Vroman's Bookstore in Pasadena, 695 E. Colorado Blvd. There will be sword-fighting knights on the sidewalk in front, medieval fare inside, a harpist, goodie bags, champagne, and good times. Oh yeah. And books! It's open to all so come on down!
