Crime has descended on the otherwise respectable spa town of Harrogate in North Yorkshire, England. Not a crime wave as in the criminal sense, although that could always happen, but an invasion of crime fiction writers and crime fiction fans. Yes, the Theakstons Old Peculiar Crime Festival , or the Harrogate International Festival as it is now called, has kicked off and runs until 24…

The news that Amazon Publishing has bought almost 50 titles written by the late crime author Ed McBain has sent ripples of alarm throughout the publishing world as the retailer encroaches ever deeper into publishing, but it has no doubt delighted McBain fans. I also read the news with a personal interest because my
marine mystery police procedural crime novels featuring…

Editing is an essential part of writing a good novel, a point that I hammered home on the Crime Writing Workshop I ran last Saturday. It is a critical requirement to getting published by a publishing house and is even more important if self-publishing.
Editing is an important part of an author's job. The first draft is just that, simply a first draft and many new writers make the mistake of thinking that they have completed their…

National Crime Writing Week kicks off today in the UK and runs until June 19, 2011. This doesn't mean that everyone should start writing crime fiction and neither does it mean that us crime writers will be furiously scribbling away during the week to meet some magical target, or because it's the only week of the year when we can write. No, the purpose of
National Crime Writing Week is to celebrate the crime genre and to encourage those who wouldn't normally read a…

It was a pleasure to meet some existing readers and introduce my crime novels to new readers at the Isle of Wight Arts Festival at
Ventnor on Sunday, and what a gorgeous day it was too, wall-to-wall sunshine with people flocking to the little beach in the small bay. I was just glad that some visitors managed to tear themselves away from the beach and the sunshine to…

I'm often asked if I have a writing routine. There are a writers who write the same time every day come what may; others will write a certain number of words every day and say, 'when I've done my quota, I'll knock off writing.' Me? I have no real set routine and I don't count the number of words. Some days the words will flow and I can spend up to eight hours, maybe more writing. Other days I will struggle to find the correct words. If the latter happens I will usually pick up my…
