How the hell did I end up here?

I'm supposed to be working - but this is Jeffery Marks's fault. I see friends here - hello? Where is everyone? How does this thing work? Can someone please help Evil E? How do I add you to my 'friends' thingy? Or, doesn't anyone want to? Oh...I see. That's the way you wanna play it, huh? Fine. Be that way. Now you know why I didn't have you On The Bubble. See if I care.

Th-th-th-that's all folks!

Well, I’m done with the Boucher book. Finished, completed, done, over and out. The files are ready to be printed and sent off for the laborious process of making it a book. I’m still getting used to the feeling. It’s a bit odd to be without the book after so long.

I’ve found myself wandering around the house a lot today. Going into a room and forgetting what I came in for. I’m sure I’ll adjust to non-deadline time again shortly, but for the moment, I’m feeling a bit guilty about not…

Spring Book Show 2007 in Atlanta

Well, I just got back from my first day of participating in that, and it was interesting. The Spring Book Show is primarily aimed at the returns and remainders market. It was astounding to see all these dealers with HUGE boxes of books, or more often, with single copies and a little label saying "Lots of 50, $3.25 NET" meaning they would sell the book to you in lots of no less than 50 copies, at $3.25 each. And these books have a retail price of anywhere from $9.95 to $21.95. Most would not… Continue

But then I got religion...

and shoved a live recording of the Patti Smith band playing the Horses album for its thirtieth anniversary into the CD player.

"I put my stamp on her" and everything was good.

My shame, my confession

I've been listening to Paul McCartney and Wings today. I haven't done this in a good thirty plus years.

I know this is not good.

Hangups

No, I'm not talking about psychosexual hangups. I'm talking about getting hung up in the details. Anybody else have this problem?

I'm starting a new series, which means I have to come up with new worlds, new characters, from scratch. Every time I start to write, I get a little ways, then am stumped and stopped in my tracks by a question. Like, "What's the favorite late-night cop hangout on Capitol Hill?" That, of course, leads to other questions: What size is a cop's beat on…

It's All About the Books, Baby!

Well, here I am in a new venue. This one I am pretty pleased to be on because I can cover both sides of my life. As a publisher I can schmooze you and wow you with our wonderful books. Be warned, I am all about selling books. I am pleased to say that Echelon has some fabulous books to choose from and you would be missing out on great stories if you overlook us. I mean it. This month, Echelon's featured title is "Murder Off the Books" by the DYANAMIC duo, Evelyn David. This is a must read for…

Entering the computer age -- kicking and screaming

Just about everyone I know has told me that Crimespace is the place to be. So, here I am. It'll probably take me a couple of days to figure out the finer points . . . but I have managed to keep a blog going, I should be able to handle a communicating in a community of like-minded folks.

Today, I'm working on my next Murderati post for Monday. Can't decide if it should be "Motive for Murder" or "Million-Dollar Market." Also working on Book # 4 in the Sasha series and have made progress…

CRIMESPACE IS COOL! PLUS MORGAN MANDEL INTRO

This is my first day on Crimespace and I'm really loving it. There's so much here I wish I had more time to explore. Already, I've found a lot of my friends from other sites have drifted over here.

I'm not addicted enough to my computer. Now I have another place to go to and spend more time!

Anyway, I should say something about my current mystery, TWO WRONGS by Morgan Mandel, a tale of vengeance and the healing power of love, published by Hard Shell Word Factory. This novel,…

Audio Books

My publisher recently asked me to record a teaser from my short stories that appear in the anthology, The EX Factor. Anyone narrate their own work before? I used some low-tech stuff (it is just a teaser, after all) and felt like the results were mixed...mostly with my own performance, I suppose.

Anyway, just curious what others' experiences have been.

Praise for Kevin Helmold's Debut Novel Echoes of Torment

"A novel from a fireman lures you into cliché, i.e. the narrative burns off the page, but it really does. A blistering powerhouse of a debut. Carl Braun, the hero, suffering post traumatic stress is absolutely compelling. The novel is also one of the best evocations of Vegas I've ever read. Rarely has a novel got it all…pace, compassion, thrills, style.…

For Gold Medal/Rat Pack Fans

Turner Classic Movies has scheduled a rare TV showing of 1963's Johnny Cool, based on a GM novel by John McPartland. Produced by Peter Lawford and starring auxiliary Rat Packer Henry Silva as well as Elizabeth ("Bewitched") Montgomery and Sammy Davis Junior, the film airs next Tuesday, March 27, at 6PM EST/3PM PST. My DVR is already set.

The Perils of Pauline

I'm excited to be a new arrival at crimespace. I'm a huge fan of fictional crimes (since real crime can get you strip searched and jail time). I love reading about it and I love writing about it. While my books are all over the map genre-wise, they do have a central theme: peril.

Someone is always in peril. Someone will die. Bad guys will be stopped. Happy endings are not optional.

If you remember those old, campy melodramas, then you'll know where… Continue

They're serving champagne brunch at the Alamo

Okay, a little bit of an in-joke. I have to admit it is feeling like back-against-the-wall time. I've got the first (ever so rough) draft of Corpse Pose due to Berkeley at the end of next week, I've done content and line edits on three separate ebook projects (with another round of line edits to go), and I have a short story (does 20,000 words really count as a short story?) due next week.

So, needless to say, if I am a trifle slow in responding to emails or chatter…
