A Great site for Readers

I like to point out good reads and places you can find them. One such place is the “Between the Lines” web site.

On “Between the Lines” you’ll find essays by and for authors, news of the best bookstores and reviews of new mystery novels. In fact, earlier this month the site featured an insightful review of Russian Roulette. It is a… Continue

And When I Die, and When I'm Gone...

I really, really hope CNN, FOX News, and all the rest have no idea. I'd like my friends to remember me the way they want to, not the way some overly-made-up (and fake in every other way too) "personality" summarizes, eulogizes, and characterizes me.

Death of a celebrity in our culture creates a feeding frenzy of pseudo-news about the person, and it makes me sick that everyone who ever spoke to him or her seems unable to resist the urge to talk about it. And the speculation from… Continue

A new flash (and I don't mean Wally West).

Dig my new flash-fiction up at A Twist of Noir. It feels good.

Nie hao !

Kensington publishing has just leased rights to publish Master Detective to the Chongqing Publishing Company in Chongqing, China. That's mainland China, or the PRC. You know, the BIG one. The rights were sold to Taiwan last year, so the Chinese language market seems to be pretty well covered at this point. I'm not sure exactly what appeal the Lindbergh kidnapping has in the far east, but I love it!

(If you're wondering about the rather cryptic title of this post, it means "hello" in… Continue

Which selection do you choose?

The recent discussion going on in John's 'The Ending' spot brings up an interesting question.

So you're standing in the bookstore and there are three detective novels you're seriously considering to puchase. You can only buy one. One books totes itself as being 'The next great Nero Wolfe or Ellery Queen!" A genuine puzzle in the traditionalist's style of writing.

The second is a new James Patterson serial-killer. One of his better ones.

The third is a book who… Continue

Gran Torino

(Also posted on One Bite at a Time.)

The Beloved Spousal Equivalent and I finally got around to watching Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino last weekend. I wish I could remember what the hell was so important that it kept me from seeing it in the theater. This is a wonderful film.

Truly a character-driven thriller, the story is about a bigoted, retired autoworker named Walt Kowalski, played by Eastwood.… Continue

Me and the White Rabbit

It's more and more Alice-like lately, with me running all the time and muttering to myself, "Oh my stars and whiskers, I'm late!" Or something like that.

So the question is, when am I supposed to do all those wonderful things people keep telling me I can't succeed without? A good business system requires learning the computer processes involved. A good marketing plan involves time spent meeting, communicating, schmoozing. A good writing process involves writing, writing, writing. A… Continue

Great Weekend Past

My home state fans really turned out to embrace Russian Roulette in the last couple of days. I had a very successful book signing at the Borders Express in Springfield Mall Saturday. Then Sunday it was déjà vu happiness at the Borders Express in Dulles Town Center Mall. It is nice to be so welcomed.

Meanwhile, the Russian Roulette blog tour continued on the… Continue

Culture and harshness in Central Europe: Adam Lebor's Writing Life

Political writing at its best highlights the unexpected changes in parts of our world that are hidden to us. That’s true of writing about the corridors of power in our own capital cities, but it’s even more of a factor for a writer like Adam Lebor whose work – fiction and nonfiction – has captured the dynamism and double-dealing… Continue
