The Professional Blogger

I met someone this weekend that I didn't even know existed: a professional blogger. I may say more about her in future entries, but she was very interesting to talk to. She studies what subjects people will find you to read about, which is of course the way to build readership and therefore interest in whatever you're presenting, in my case, books.

She suggested cats. I know, I know. It sounds, if I may, fluffy. Still, people love pets, so if you talk about yours, they tend to read… Continue

Who said Crime writers are creepy. :)

Thanks for the warm welcome! I have to admit that I get a little intimidated by mingling with real writers. I know that you all were not all born published writers and that at some point you were just like me. A wana be with a hard drive filled with finished or partly fished stories in one form or another. So I thank you for your acceptance and encouragement. Sally

J.J. Abrams and Tom Cruise working together

Stories are circulating that J.J. Abrams and Tom Cruise are working on a story-line for 'Mission Impossible 4.' Here we go again---a revamping of an old series. Still. . . . one can't just automatically pan it and say its rubbish. Cruise is still a bankable star, and after the success of Star Trek, Abrams is the biggest director in Tinsel Town. So the raw ingredients look attractive. Wonder what the plot is gonna be.

A living foreign correspondent the most useless thing to media industry -- Reviewing a "Novel of Jihad"

The magazine of Harvard's Nieman Fellowship asked me to write an essay about Jeffrey Fleishman's "Promised Virgins: A Novel of Jihad". I wrote about why international correspondents like me and Fleishman, Cairo bureau chief for the LA Times, turn to novels to express the depth of what we learn about a foreign culture. Here's how the article begins:

Jay Morgan,… Continue

Grassroots signs for my Palestinian crime novels

A new review in the Ann Arbor Chronicle suggests healthy grassroots popularity for my Palestinian crime novels. The review of my first Palestinian crime novel "The Collaborator of Bethlehem" (UK Title: The Bethlehem Murders) is written by Robin Agnew, owner of Aunt Agatha's Mystery Bookstore in Ann Arbor. She… Continue

The first review of THE CONVICT'S SWORD

Well, it's a reviewlet, but very welcome. This one is by Christopher Gortner, a fellow author, and appears on the DAILY BEAST. We are still a month and a half from release, so I assume the ARCs are beginning to reach people.

The link is http://bit.ly/q3FpZ.

I like some of the phrases: "brutality-beneath-the-silk" and "This historical reads like a modern thriller." I wonder if I shocked Mr. Gortner. :)

An Interview with Peter Rozovsky

Peter Rozovsky is the creator of the popular and award-winning blog, Detectives Beyond Borders, which focuses on crime fiction written outside the United States. For those not familiar with Peter or his blog, an anecdote from last year’s Bouchercon will give an idea of the regard with which he is held in the crime fiction community. No less an authority than Ali Karim found himself stuck for the name of a foreign (to Americans) writer, and solved his dilemma by asking if Peter Rozovsky was in… Continue

Meet Me in MD tomorrow!

The very first bookstore event featuring Russian Roulette is tomorrow in the Borders superstore in Waldorf, MD. The signing was originally scheduled for the nearby Borders Express but it kind of grew out of that space. That store’s manager, Becky, is such a good friend that she convinced the Borders folks to move my signing to the much larger store down the street.

If you stop by Saturday between 1 pm and 7 pm you can get one of the first autographed copies of Russian Roulette. The… Continue

On Liking and Not Liking Books

I'm mostly amused but sometimes bemused by people who can't get over the fact that I didn't like a book they liked. They suggest a book or an author, and before I can stop myself, I say something like, "I tried it (or read it) and didn't care for it." Suddenly it's as if I proclaimed that I really enjoyed the last time I sawed off someone's legs. By the look on the person's face, I know I've been relegated in her mind to idiot. She might say something to indicate that I obviously didn't try… Continue

A NEW BEGINNING FOR GOD OF DARKNESS

Pundits have for the past year danced around those shoveling dirt onto the grave of traditional publishers. Not that publishers will vanish into the hole any time soon. But the emergence of ebooks seems ready to drive the mass of readers to electronic readers.…

"An Honor Just to be Nominated" for YWO's Book of the Year

A tad bittersweet coming in second though...

Just found out that "Frame-Up," my recently completed crime thriller co-written with Brad Schoenfeld took first runner up in a well-known British-based competition for unpublished writers in all genres.

The contest is run by a site called YouWriteOn, or YWO for short, which is sponsored by the British Arts Council. It's at http://www.youwriteon.com/

One gets nominated by one's peers at the site (and there must be a… Continue
