F iction writers are always trying to figure out what makes a cop tick. What makes cops run toward danger rather than fleeing from danger? Are there any psychological motivations and stresses that might make a law enforcement officer crack or cross the line between law abider and law breaker? How far can their characters be pushed in the novel until their world…

Mike Dennis is no stranger to readers of this blog. A frequent commenter, his novel, Setup on Front Street, made my Best Reads of 2011 list. The Take made one of my monthly lists this year, and his short story, The Session, is one of the small handful of best short stories I’ve ever read, regardless of genre.
It was a treat to sit next to him on this year’s Bouchercon panel, moderated by Peter…

At Monks Brook U3A on 8 January I was delighted to talk to the audience about my DI Andy Horton crime novels, how I draw my inspiration from the area in which the novels are set (the Solent area on the South Coast of England) and my method for developing plot lines and creating…

I don’t like writing Top Ten lists. It’s too hard to draw the line, but 2013 was such a good reading year for me, this post would be too long if I wrote a blurb for each worthy book. So, here are the Top Ten, plus some honorable mentions. (Books listed in the order in which they were read.)
The Cold, Cold Ground, Adrian McKinty. If there’s ever been a better historical mystery written, let me know. McKinty…

Those who actually experience the cold winds and heavy snows have learned to adjust: they either hibernate like a bear, or they dress appropriately and go out and continue life, experience the fresh air, make snow angels in the covered grass and basically thumb their noses at 'old man winter'.
I am originally from Wyoming, have been in North Carolina for 1 1/2 years (yes, I got spoiled by the warm temperatures), and now we are preparing for the army transfer up to Alaska.
Enjoy…

In the order in which I read them:
Crooked Numbers, Tim O’Mara. The second book of what is shaping up to be an excellent series. He has a franchise brewing here. Don’t be surprised to see Raymond Donne on television someday. You heard it here first. (Unless you already heard it elsewhere. This is the first I’ve heard of it.)
Saturday’s Child, Ray…

2014 promises to be another productive and interesting year. I'm not the sort of person to make New Year's Resolutions but I do like to set goals and then measure the achievement of them throughout the year. This comes as a result of my business background in Marketing and Training where goal setting is important just as long as those goals are realistic and achievable. …

Recently, I listed my book “Ghost” in the Kindle Countdown Promotion. To do this, your book must be listed with Kindle Select and not have had a price change in the past 30 days. Additionally, your select commitment must not be within two weeks of termination.
“Ghost” was, at the time, priced at $3.99. I picked a three day promotion. For the first 24 hours, the price was $0.99. The second 24 hours, it was $1.99, and then $2.99 for the final 24…

First, I want to thank all of you who have already said your piece, continue to weigh in, or will contribute your ideas for what you think half of our world’s population should be reading fiction-wise. This will be an on-going discussion, so please don’t think you’ve missed the boat.
Truth is, I am on a mission to get men reading fiction again.
Some 80% of fiction…

(Written in September before the move to Carlisle)
Driving to work one night I kept scanning the radio stations trying to find something worthwhile. The AM side of my radio has gone kaput so I don't get to listen to the talk shows like I used to. The one FM station has sports talk during the drive so I usually end up listening to music. Taking Care Of Business by Bachman-Turner Overdrive…

Festivus really was a holiday this year.
First, Sons of Spade, a web site dedicated to fictional PIs, named A Small Sacrifice runner-up for Best PI Novel of 2013.
Then, before turning in, I learned Woody Haut, writing in the LA Review of Books, has named Grind Joint among his fifteen favorite reads of 2013. Not in the Top Ten, but that was populated by the…
