Sydney - Australia - Tuesday 1 - 7th May

I'll be giving a talk on the Razorgangs of Sydney featured in my book Shark Arm Unhooked? at Cross Bookstore, Kings Cross Wednesday 2nd May, 2pm. So if there are any Crimespace folks around, please come in and say Hi. As I live in Brisbane and don't get to Sydney too often it's a one-off opportunity.

My Fabulous Fans

Posted by Lorraine Bartlett

Is it only me or don’t all authors aspire to have a fan club of rabid readers? (Come on, guys, admit it, you know you want it/them.)

Well, that hasn’t yet happened to me. Will it ever happen? Good question. Too bad I’m not clairvoyant. So in the meantime, I’ll just have to (say it along with me) write a good book! Yup, that’s apparently the way to snag a cadre of life-long readers.

But wait! How can you snag readers if your book doesn’t have…

Life's Mysteries

Okay, so here's what I really want to know. Daniel created this great place to meet, blog, swap stories, etc. I've recently been the benefactor of other generous acts. A fellow Five Star author has recently created pages on MySpace and HabitualReader for us. I even have my own page on MySpace as well as a web site for my mysteries.

What I want to know is if it's so easy for us authors to find each other on these sites, how do we get readers to find us as well? When I look at all the… Continue

Into Each Life . . .

Not only rain, but a whole lot of other crap falls as well. I've been sending well-wishes to fellow author Elaine Viets, who, by now, most of the modern world has learned, suffered a stroke. I understand she's doing much better, but her book tour for her May release is caput. Elaine's friends are asking folks to help spread the word for next month's launch. Can't say I never did anything for my fellow authors. ;) If you are like minded,…

Currently reading...

I'm in the midst of David Morrell's Scavenger, the follow-up to Creepers, which I really liked (I think it would make a great movie). This one isn't as good; in fact, it's a bit far-fetched, but I'm far enough in to keep going. Next up: Craig Johnson's Kindness Goes Unpunished.

Noirathon - LA vs NY: Round 8

The Champ: HE WALKED BY NIGHT (LA)

Is it just me or is there a secret CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON connection running through the last couple of films. First CROOKED WEB, with Richard Denning and now a pair of films featuring B Movie everyman Whit Bissell (Dr. Thompson in CREATURE) and written by Harry Essex, who also penned CREATURE. Coincidence? You be the judge. (Insert that famous strident CREATURE musical sting here – dah dah… Continue

V-Cs, wasps and saints' days

St George’s Day today – so happy St George’s Day to all. I gather that Guildford is making a big thing of this, but as I’m not able to go to town in the lunch-hour (in any sense), then I can’t confirm anything. Lord H and I were wondering if we should re-enact the traditional slaying of the dragon by the good saint himself, but were unable to agree on which of us should take which part. So this mini-drama has, I’m afraid, had to be shelved for now. However, at work I have taken out my red,…

Who are you? Do you really wanna know?

No, this isn't going to be the definitive autobiography. It's actually about telephones. I think we're forgetting how to use them.

What's up with people not identifying themselves when they call a stranger on the phone these days. I'm not talking about individuals. I get calls from companies we do business with, and I inevitably have to not only ask who they are but why they're calling.

Used to be when you called someone you didn't know the opening went something like… Continue

We're BACK!

Just returned from a book tour through Florida and Sleuthfest in Miami. Sleuthfest was the bomb! Linda Fairstein, a friend from her days at the NYC District Attorney's Office, was great as always! Renee Balcer of Law and Order Criminal Intent was charming! We saw lots of fellow authors, old friends and new. John and Joanne of the Murder on the Beach Bookstore were just great. We sat on panels, signed books, caroused in South Beach with our terrific publishers and drank at the hotel bar every… Continue

The Unspeakable

Posted by Sheila Connolly

Last week I spent several days visiting my daughter, who is a college senior and who will be graduating in a few weeks. I always enjoy hanging out at her college campus, because of the incredible richness of opportunities for entertainment, intellectual stimulation, and sheer diversion. It did not disappoint this time, and I’m pretty sure you’ll be hearing about various lectures I…

Mild and Bitter

Safely back from Austria (definition of a good break = only 2 nappies changed in four days!) and straight into the bear pit that is the London Book Fair. Luckily I checked my invite before setting out because I was all set on grabbing my passport and making the trek over to Docklands where it was last time round.

This year the festivities were in the far more civilised… Continue

Julie - Good to hear from a fellow Bulleteer. Have we met before?

I see you made it into the 'grand slam edition, No.6. Will go back

and re-read you.

Yes, Wannabee was quite a gal. She would so love to have more

adventures, but like you say - where is the opportunity?

Haven't worked out how to drive the Crimespace properly yet, so

will visit you on your page when I've worked out the details.

A Second Opinion

Anyone who’s been enjoying my play-by-play of the Film Noir Festival really ought to check out Film Noir Foundation mogul Alan Rode's blog. It’s much better informed and far more articulate than my own off-the-cuff and highly subjective comments.

For example Alan gave last night’s bout to GLASS WALL and the truth is, he’s probably right. It’s definitely a better movie the CROOKED WEB, but personally, I just couldn’t get past how sweet,… Continue

Focus On: New Zealand Writers

There are some great crime writers from NZ around who deserve a lot more attention than they sometimes get.

Lists the ones we've identified this far.

Many of these writers don't base themselves in NZ and don't necessarily write about NZ. Some that you might like to track down:…
