My Polish Publisher Comes Up Trumps

I have just received the Polish copy of my thriller, In Cold Daylight, renamed Fire and Water in Poland (Ogien i Woda) and it looks fantastic.

The cover image is very impressive and the book is a cross between a hardback and paperback with a very unusual flap extending from the front and back cover which you can use as a handy bookmark - a brilliant idea. There is a lovely illustration… Continue

Christmas Crimes & Causes (R)

A couple years ago I asked readers to tell me what they most liked and hated about Christmas. Here's what they said. The list works for every year, so I guess that means we're a consistent people. Any additions or corrections?

I like Christmas because

reindeer fly, monsters become good guys, and the ugliest Christmas tree is O.K.

poor and rich, wise and ignorant, powerful and powerless, all stop and consider their purpose

you get to see people at… Continue

Incredible, Powerful! - Silent Scream By Author Ann B Keller

Dear Yvonne:

I've just finished Silent Scream, Yvonne. I read your book in one day and I can honestly say it is one of the most incredible, frightening and compelling books I've ever read. And you put my words on the back cover, too! My goodness. I'm so very honored. Thank you for doing that.

You know, when I picked up Silent Scream this morning, I sort of paged through it from the back to the front, as my mother often… Continue

Meet me Tomorrow in VA

Okay, I’ll admit that when we’re coming up on Christmas I hang in bookstores as much as they let me. This weekend I’m haunting some of the smaller stores that have supported me through the year. For example, Friday I’ll visit Waldenbooks in Manassas Mall. That book signing will be from 4 pm to 8 pm to catch the early evening shoppers. Mapquest rangers will find me at 8300 Sudley Rd, Manassas, VA.

Re-reading

In Steinbeck's THE RED PONY, there's a grandfather who tells the same stories over and over. When it's pointed out to him, quite rudely, he says something like, "I don't know why I do it; I only know how I want people to feel when I do." Revisiting stories is about how they make us feel.

I seldom read books a second or third time, but I know people who do. Why? They know what to expect and how it will make them feel. When life is unpredictable or too tragically predictable, books… Continue

A Crime That Shocked A City...

In 1995, Austin, Texas was rocked by the brutal murder of a lesbian princess named Regina Hartwell. Even though Regina's body was burned beyond recognition, within days police had two suspects. One was the beautiful ex-cheerleader who was the object of Regina's desire. The other was a man who would take the fall for murder...

Staging the Scene: The Story Behind the New York Times Story

Each Sunday, The New York Times’ Real Estate section showcases a city residence. The feature is called “Habitat” and the articles don’t merely profile a residence; rather, the stories discuss how the space suits the people who live there. When my husband, Joe Stanko, and I learned that the New York Times was interested in featuring our apartment, one question came to our minds: Where in God’s name would we stash our stuff?

If you’ve never lived in New York City, you don’t know what… Continue

Blackwater

Monday’s indictment charging five Blackwater “security guards” with voluntary manslaughter in the deaths of 14 unarmed Baghdad civilians on September 16, 2007, reminded me of investigative journalist Jeremy Scahill’s excellent exposé of Blackwater USA, the private army of mercenaries hired and funded by the U.S. government.

In his 2007 book, Scahill pointed out that during the Gulf War in 1991, only 10% of people deployed in the war zone were private contractors. However, when George… Continue

Crime does pay

Sometimes I spend time seeking out crime news because life is stranger than fiction. I'm always on the look out for innovation in crime, heinous crimes, and plain old weird crimes. Call me loco, but I do it to build some super creepy characters in my stories. One old adage that holds true is crime doesn't pay, that is unless your Gov. Rod Blagojevich. The Illinois Governor is in trouble for trying to get paid for his crimes.

According… Continue

Conspiracy!

Harley L. Sachs

Prologue: Portland

Jake Friedman didn’t believe in ghosts or clairvoyance, but he did have foreboding. When he opened the office door and switched on the light he felt a presence in the room that made him pause. There was no one there. Everything appeared to be the way he had… Continue

Citizens' Police Academy: Narcotics Squad-Part Two

(Cross posted to Working Stiffs)

While heroin is by far the biggest drug problem in Pittsburgh, it isn’t the only one.

Crack cocaine is manufactured “in house” by cooking powder cocaine and baking soda into a solid “rock,” which is then smoked. Crack is generally more potent than the powdered form, since the cocaine needs to be rather pure to create crack, whereas the powder can be cut with other ingredients,… Continue

Another cool review

I often like to use this blog to point you to an interesting website, even if it is my own. Today I’d like to introduce you to Teresa Lickey.

I met Teresa at another smaller venue, the Borders Express in Dulles Town Center. She picked up a copy of Blood and Bone partially based on my rather egotistical sign: “If you like Alex Cross you’ll love Hannibal Jones.” She sent me an e-mail less than a week later with some very positive comments.

Thank you, Teresa, for your… Continue

Choosing the Next Project

I've been stalled lately, and it's not all my fault. Publishing is as scary these days as everything else: will my publisher make it through the hard times? Will they slash their schedule to save money? If they do, will I be a slashee?

The uncertainty makes it difficult to decide what's next on my agenda. I should iron out the wrinkles in the sequel to Book One, but will anyone care three or four years from now when it's done with editing and all the et ceteras? I should work on the… Continue
