Amazon Rankings again...

Somehow The Concrete Maze jumped from 1.5 million to 108k. Maybe I sold a book. Maybe Amazon simply weeded out their stock and pulped the 1.4 million books that were ahead of mine. Hard to say. Still, I won't rest until I've taken control of the #1 spot. Who's there now? Harry Potter? My Tio Luis can kick his patootie… Continue

Murder Can Be A Zoo

That's the name of the New Book piece that was just published in the current issue of Mystery Scene Magazine. That's issue # 100, rather momentous, a nice bit of luck. The article refers to how animals are being used more and more in mystery stories these days. Not only does this reflect a greater senstivity toward animals by society at large, but a larger understanding of their importance not only to the planet but to the way they enrich our lives. This love of animals is why Marilyn Victor…

Recent Reads...

I recently finished an ARC of THE CONCRETE MAZE, by author Steven Torres. This book marks his first effort at book-length noir/hardboiled fiction (he's written a series of police procedurals set in Puerto Rico that I need to check out). Anyway, it's a doozy. Fans of the genre will find all the classic elements at play here - urban setting, drugs, prostitution and plenty of desperation and impending doom. What's different is the strong sense of familial loyalty and…

Annual Writing Retreat

If you're an aspiring writer, let me recommend attending a

retreat/workshop. You might consider something like Clarion or Viable

Paradise, but even better would be something you can attend on an

annual basis. I go to a weeklong workshop every summer with 5-8 other

writers at Gibraltar Point on the Toronto Islands.

For one week

every year I am able to leave my other responsibilities behind--father,

husband, innkeeper--and focus 100% on being a writer. I… Continue

Hey, could I get some help here?

posted by Jeanne Munn Bracken

I'm nobody's idea of a tech weenie. Oh, sure, if it's on the internet, I can probably find it faster than the average bear, but when it comes to making computers do what they're supposed to do, I'm sunk. Deep.

At my library job, I'm often asked to help patrons with their computer problems--usually printing or e-mail. I can figure out most…

Noir City Northwest, Report #6

Is there magic in the film noir world? Sure. Rigging the lights so shadows fall just so or the camera catches cigarette smoke drifting heavenward like a lost soul takes a special kind of alchemy. Pairing up actors who can convey twisted animal longing in a single glance is no easy trick.

But actual magic? No. There’s no room for illusion on these mean streets. If someone says they’re communing with spirits and you don’t see a bottle of rye whiskey, then you, my friend,…

Traveling the Back Roads of Jersey

I was stuck in traffic on I-80 west. The backup was at least five miles (which I'm told is fairly common on I-80), when it struck me. In addition to a fertile, if slightly deadly, imagination, every mystery writer desperately needs a Global Positioning System (GPS) that can safely, quickly, and with a slight British accent, point out alternative routes to author events. Luckily, Mr. Evelyn David, or as he is better and more fondly…

Wasting time

So, I haven't been snooping around here much. And this is the first post on my page since St. Paddy's Day. But with July turning out to be extremely slow at work, it looks like I'll be nosing around more frequently. Yay!

Those Post Publication Blues

Okay ... so The Accident Man has been out for about 10 days in England and I am going slowly nuts. It's like waiting for exam results. I've done everything I can. Now I've got to find out my grade. So far, I'd give it a low B ... The first chart week I'd only been out two or three days and I crawled in at 42 on the UK hardback fiction list. Second week, I staggered up to 20. The publishers are reasonably satisfied, but they're still wanting that big breakthrough moment, maybe from a piece of… Continue

FREE BOOKS

"When people find out I'm an author, they ask me for a

free book," whispered Burl Barer bombastically while shaking his

forefinger in the face of fate ominously, yet with typical asymmetric

flairs recently removed from the trunk of his car, "and I tell them,

`WHAT?? If I were a butcher, would you ask me to throw you a bon

appetite?"

Barer, best known for his succinct rambling slimmed down contemporary prose characterized by brevity…

Showing Teeth

posted by Doranna Durgin

Okay. I'm gonna get political. And I'm gonna get opinionated. I hope you're ready!

There's an orchestrated series of aggressive spay/neuter laws sweeping the country--or trying to. And they suck. They should be fought, tooth and claw and yes, fiercely worded blogs.

I said this to an agility friend at practice the other day and startled her deeply. I don't blame her for being surprised--of anyone in this world, I am vocal in…

Are ya listed?

There are lots of ways for readers to find a new writer they want to try, but perhaps the easiest is to look them up in the Yellow Pages. Specifically, I recommend the Author Yellow Pages web site. AuthorYellowPages.com is a searchable directory of author websites. After years of hearing from readers who wanted easy access to authors and their websites, The Book Report Network created this website where authors list their official and publisher websites, as well as fan and…

5 Champagne Flutes for The Marian Kind!!!

Woo Hoo! The Marian Kind is now on sale, and my first review, from Cocktail Reviews, also hit the airways.

Here's what Black Russian had to say...

"Set yourself up for a fun ride!"

"excellent one-liners that made me laugh out loud."

"A breath of fresh air, The Marian Kind is a must read for all romantic comedy readers."

"Favourite lines:

He took a scone and stared like it was Snow White’s…

Noir City Northwest, Report #5

Three, count ’em, three Mets in the starting line-up, and an inside the park home run from the Mariners’ Ichiro Suzuki. Do I regret missing the All-Star Game? Nope. Not when there’s noir to be seen. Especially two rare titles that have never appeared on video.

What do they have in common? Screenwriter…

Ask not what SinC can do for you. . .

posted by Donna Andrews, SinC Chapter Liaison and author of the Meg Langslow & Turing Hopper mystery series.

Potential SinC members often ask what benefits they can get from joining

the organization. And most SinC members--including me--have very

decided ideas about what benefits SinC could or should offer.

But just to play devil's advocate--or possibly prove that I'm still a

child of the sixties--I'd like to suggest that we all need to shift our…

Questions, Answers, Sales, Chocolate!

Wow! I just got off the phone with the Southern half of Evelyn David. She just finished her talk at the Lawton Public Library in Lawton, Oklahoma and was bouncing off the walls with excitement. I've heard of a runner's high – that point in a race where all your endorphins kick in. I think there…

Bad Words

On Sunday last week I sold 20 books during two hours at a Barnes

& Noble. Well, actually, I sold 17 and the store had me sign

the remaining 3. One of the 17 buyers e-mailed me yesterday,

wanting to return the book because of all the f*cks and sh&ts and

even the "Good Christs." Of course, she repeated all those words

in her e-mail several times. She wanted my home address so she could

ship it back. Of course, I thought, a murder mystery set amid

hunters… Continue

Compassion

I have a quote on my Crimespace page: "Kindness and compassion could solve a whole lot of problems." Somebody asked me the other day what's the context, why do I have that there? So after a while, when the fact that somebody had asked was still on my mind, I decided to blog about it.

First off, it's not really a quote, nobody has said exactly those words that I know of, except me. It's there because a saying on a web page is sort of like an epitaph -- it should be something…
