Profile Information

About Me:
Keith's most recent crime novel is The Night Men, his fourth, which The Washington Post called "one of the best" of the year. His short crime story, Dead Gray, appeared in the March/April '07 issue of Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine, and another, Into Stone, will appear in the Spring '08 issue of Demolition. His short films have won Best Writing, Best Musical, and Director's Choice awards at various international film festivals. As a result, he's now in development on a feature-length musical.

His most recent short film, I Love You, I'm Sorry, And I'll Never Do It Again, is a short crime musical, currently on the film festival circuit.

His previous film, Credo, was a collaboration with opera singer/actor Larry Picard, with whom he first worked on The Ship That Lies at the Bottom, Keith's 20-minute opera with original short fiction by two dozen authors, performed aboard the decommissioned lightship Frying Pan in New York City.

Formerly the keyboardist for The Cosmic Debris, the spoken word and electronic music group that debuted at #1 on the New Age Voice Airwaves Top-100 as Alias Zone, he also played keyboards with the Afropop/reggae band Kadara. He has worked extensively with opera singers, combining classical voice with electronic and world music influences. His unconventional techniques for making screen musicals by recording singers live on the set without accompaniment have been the subject of several articles in Recording magazine.

He is married to Kathleen Haaversen. They have twin toddlers.

He has no hobbies.

Moving Right Along...

For NaNoWriMo I worked on a spy novel in the James Bond vein and not only failed to reach the 50,000 word goal, I also failed to even get close to the longer length I wanted. Now the rewriting process begins, and new material is suggesting itself, and I'm enjoying the process, but this isn't the crime novel I've dreamed of writing. I have decided to put my name on it, but I hope the market and publishers will let me dabble in both action thrillers and crime novels--heck, it works for Dan Simmons… Continue

Creative Marketing (R)

Since my new book releases next month, I've been thinking (a lot) about marketing. It seems to me that we must be just as creative in this phase as we were when plotting the novel, just as bold in approaching various venues as we were when seeking an agent. It's a bit daunting.

Here's what I've learned, or at least what I think I've learned.

No book will fit every venue every time. You have to choose where you'll expend your energies and forget trying to sell to every reader in the country. My… Continue
