MIRACLE ON THE HUDSON

Added by Tory Richards on February 8, 2009 at 10:20am — 3 Comments

Today on Amazon:

I see that Amazon now also has the cover image up for THE CONVICT'S SWORD. But more importantly: even though the book is not available until the end of July, the Amazon ranking is 19,000 on preorders. I'm astonished.

You must know that my books have never received any promotion, so I can only assume that they are gaining faithful readers on their own. My agent said once that it takes 7 titles in a series to establish it. This is # 6 for me, and I'm crossing fingers that this one will… Continue

WHISPER IN THE DARK RELEASED

The US version of my thriller WHISPER IN THE DARK is now in stores everywhere. Whisper received a starred review from Publishers Weekly, in which they so kindly said the book is:

"a taut psychological thriller with hints of the supernatural and an ending that will leave readers speechless. ... The deeply satisfying story moves at a furious pace, packed with unexpected and original clues and plot twists."

I'm not sure how murder, mayhem, mysterious religions and a touch of… Continue

Only in America

Only in America ......do drugstores make the sick walk all the way to the back of the store to get their prescriptions while healthy people can buy cigarettes at the front.

Only in America .....do people order double cheeseburgers, large fries, and a diet coke.

Only in America .....do banks leave both doors open and then chain the pens to the counters.

Only in America.....do we leave cars worth thousands of dollars in the driveway and put our useless junk in the… Continue

An "Elementary" Question

Here's today's question: in a mystery, which element is most important?

I know, I know: it's impossible to choose one. But just for fun, consider which element an author should work on most carefully. Plot? Character? Setting? Irony? Tone? Something else?

I actually have a pretty strong opinion on this one, and I'll express it on Monday, but (being a fair, open-minded sort) I'm willing to hear what everyone else thinks first. But be prepared for an argument!

Hello all. Just wanted to let you know that I have a new story in the latest issue of Crooked. I think there is still a day or two left to vote for the story if you like it. I don't care about the vote, just that you dig the story. It's called 'Partners'. Enjoy. For more of my stuff that's out there on the web go to ericbeetner.blogspot.com

The Where of Creation

Another question that I get a lot, which I'm passing on to you: Where do your story ideas come from? A subset of that, I guess, is how do they evolve from the "I have an idea!" stage to a full-blown story?

I suppose I should be answering my own questions, at least some of them. This one is easy for me. My ideas almost always come when I have an extended period of time alone, usually in the car. The details almost always work themselves out on long drives or long walks.

PSYCH: A MIND IS A TERRIBLE THING TO READ by William Rabkin

I'd been curious about this novel since the news broke last January it would be written. I was most curious how author William Rabkin would handle Shawn-Vision, Spencer's ultra-perceptiveness shown on TV in extreme close-ups and highlighting. I'm happy to report it's delivered quite smoothly (e.g. Shawn looked at the truck driver and he saw. Saw the chafing on his face. Saw the redness in his eyes.") as is the interplay between Shawn and Gus, the heart of the show.

What I'd heard of… Continue

Their client is Alice Fairchild, a specialist in the recovery of Holocaust antiquities, who claims to work for heirs of the brooch's owner. When Pilarsky is murdered shortly after leaving a message for Lydia, she must pick up the trail with Bill Smith, four months estranged from Lydia after their last case (Winter and… Continue
