Wax Pool 2000
Like a wax pool
Formed beneath the once proud candle
Lies the warm remains
Of a light once bright.
When moments ago the candle bright
It shone upon those
Around the starlit circle.
How hot the wax did burn.
The wheels of life turned round and round.
Into the flame the moth did fly,
Snuffed the life blood
From its ill begotten flight.
The lifeless form
Of still warm pooled…

Long ago in my mis-spent youth, I used to spend a great deal of my passion in writing poetry. Every once in a great while I dust off some of those old sheets -- just to remind myself who I've been.
Gypsy Love Song
Thank you for the kind words that
You rained like silver on my head.
They made me laugh until I cried.
Too bad they were so insincere.… Continue

10 Solutions to Top 10 Reasons Your Book was REJECTED
by Robert W. Walker
As both a writing professor and an editor with my Knife Services, I see all manner of writing from the best and greatest writing to the worst and most unfortunate. When an autopsy for your story or book is necessary, it may require a scalpel. In fact a Stryker saw may be needed to cut it to the bone. When I speak to other writers and editors, what I hear again and again about a book’s rejection is that it…

From time to time we talk about the specialty bookstores and their gracious way of hand-selling mysteries. A few years ago, Jeff Hatfield, one of the owners of Uncle Hugo's/Uncle Edgar's bookstores in Minneapolis, wrote a wonderful review of HELL SCREEN in the store magazine. It was long, detailed, intelligent, and insightful and appeared together with a review of one of Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe novels. I felt greatly honored. Now, several years later, Jeff Hatfield's customers apparently…

Did he try to barter Obama's Senate seat? Well, he says, yes-- not, he insists, for money... but for love. The interview referenced below is in the second bloc of our show, but you guys might enjoy the rest of the program, too. Still, if you just want to hear Mr. Blagojevich choke-and-stutter, it's at about 12:50 min into the program. i>chuckle> Please note the opening and closing musical "bumpers" we used, in honor…

Two perspectives here: my own and some recent experiences.
First, mine. For some reason I don't understand, I often am called Pat (shades of old SNL skits!) If often happened in my years of teaching, not surprising since there was another teacher of similar build, coloring, glasses, and height who is named Pat. So Pat was called Peg and I was called Pat, and we laughed about it.
But since I became Peg the Author, I still run into people who call me Pat, and they didn't…

Seen the news about the women who were rescued by the Turkish police yesterday? Remind you of anything? Like The Murderers’ Club perhaps? Please note, if you haven’t read The Murderers’ Club yet, this blog contains some spoilers!
So, I got a phone call from my husband today asking if I’d seen the news about the women who’d just been rescued in Turkey. Turns out they thought they were part of a Big Brother-style TV show, only to find out that the whole thing was a scam. Instead of…

Friday links (a.k.a. time-wastery) come early, since I’m actually hoping to get some writing done tomorrow. So here you go:
It’s a book! It’s a movie! It’s a website! No, it’s a digi-novel. When the TV writers strike was going on (last year, was it?), apparently CSI creator Anthony Zuiker (along with Duane Zwierczynski) came up with
this hybrid… Continue

Well, folks, here we are again, 1 day away from the anniversary of a
dark mark on our history. If you're like me, you will remember quite vividly where you were on that fateful morning.
I work for a large multi media firm, and on that awful day I was at my desk, as usual. At 9:05 one of my staff members call to say she was held up in traffic on the highway.
"But Donna," she added, "there's something really wierd going on. Everything's really quiet out…

I'm reading the fourth in Jim Benn's Billy Boyle series, and the term "seeing the elephant" came up. I wasn't familiar with it but it wasn't hard to figure out that it refers to being in combat, the idea being that once a person has "seen the elephant" he's forever changed.
I love learning such words and phrases, whether they come from the past, from different sections of the country, or from social groups outside my experience. I recall that in 1969 my husband-then boyfriend-just…

Here's my latest post on the
International Crime Authors Reality Check blog:
I keep finding new reasons why I write my novels about the Palestinians. Usually these reasons have nothing to do with the Palestinians.
Here’s the one that may be the deepest, the one I’ve known about for a while, but have only recently been able to face up to: it’s because I’m scared of home.
Not so long ago, I read the 1992…
