No, I'm not talking about psychosexual hangups. I'm talking about getting hung up in the details. Anybody else have this problem?
I'm starting a new series, which means I have to come up with new worlds, new characters, from scratch. Every time I start to write, I get a little ways, then am stumped and stopped in my tracks by a question. Like, "What's the favorite late-night cop hangout on Capitol Hill?" That, of course, leads to other questions: What size is a cop's beat on…

Well, here I am in a new venue. This one I am pretty pleased to be on because I can cover both sides of my life. As a publisher I can schmooze you and wow you with our wonderful books. Be warned, I am all about selling books. I am pleased to say that Echelon has some fabulous books to choose from and you would be missing out on great stories if you overlook us. I mean it. This month, Echelon's featured title is "Murder Off the Books" by the DYANAMIC duo, Evelyn David. This is a must read for…

Just about everyone I know has told me that Crimespace is the place to be. So, here I am. It'll probably take me a couple of days to figure out the finer points . . . but I have managed to keep a blog going, I should be able to handle a communicating in a community of like-minded folks.
Today, I'm working on my next Murderati post for Monday. Can't decide if it should be "Motive for Murder" or "Million-Dollar Market." Also working on Book # 4 in the Sasha series and have made progress…

This is my first day on Crimespace and I'm really loving it. There's so much here I wish I had more time to explore. Already, I've found a lot of my friends from other sites have drifted over here.
I'm not addicted enough to my computer. Now I have another place to go to and spend more time!
Anyway, I should say something about my current mystery, TWO WRONGS by Morgan Mandel, a tale of vengeance and the healing power of love, published by Hard Shell Word Factory. This novel,…

My publisher recently asked me to record a teaser from my short stories that appear in the anthology, The EX Factor. Anyone narrate their own work before? I used some low-tech stuff (it is just a teaser, after all) and felt like the results were mixed...mostly with my own performance, I suppose.
Anyway, just curious what others' experiences have been.

"A novel from a fireman lures you into cliché, i.e. the narrative burns off the page, but it really does. A blistering powerhouse of a debut. Carl Braun, the hero, suffering post traumatic stress is absolutely compelling. The novel is also one of the best evocations of Vegas I've ever read. Rarely has a novel got it all…pace, compassion, thrills, style.…

Okay, a little bit of an in-joke. I have to admit it is feeling like back-against-the-wall time. I've got the first (ever so rough) draft of Corpse Pose due to Berkeley at the end of next week, I've done content and line edits on three separate ebook projects (with another round of line edits to go), and I have a short story (does 20,000 words really count as a short story?) due next week.
So, needless to say, if I am a trifle slow in responding to emails or chatter…

As I blogged at SHOTS CONFIDENTIAL, I thought to draw your attention to this:
On 6 April, Macmillan New Writing will publish Borderlands by young Irish author Brian McGilloway. It is the first in a…

I've had a couple of e-mails asking me about the neck sniffing thing, so I thought I would explain. I was down in London a couple of days ago and there I was, happily tootling up the escalator at Liverpool Street Station when I felt someone pressing really, really close behind me. "Hello", I thought, "Either you've pulled, Donna, or you're getting your pocket picked." I've had relationships with people who got less intimate on a first date. Before I could do anything, I then felt a nose on…

I was out running errands today (doing some shopping...getting the monster puppy new food and water bowls, collar and leash...he's outgrowing EVERYTHING at an astonishing rate!!!). I figured I would get them done today since I was off duty and the monkeys (the two of our three children who are still at home) were at school.
As I was leaving my favorite local mass retailer, I noticed a couple in the parking lot having a good old fashioned, knock down, drag out, screaming, yelling,…

Just did something that I found quite scary - I sent off 25,000 words of a thriller I'm writing to my agent. The hope, of course, is that she'll love it and beg for more. The fear is that she'll hate it and suggest my taking up needlecrafts. Another fear is that the reaction might fall somewhere between those two chairs. That eventuality signifies real work in rewriting which is something I find hard because it is painstaking and... dull.
Now, here is the history of how I got…

Well, I'm done with the Boucher book. Finished, completed, done, over and out. The files are ready to be printed and sent off for the laborious process of making it a book. I'm still getting used to the feeling. It's a bit odd to be without the book after so long.
I've found myself wandering around the house a lot today. Going into a room and forgetting what I came in for. I'm sure I'll adjust to non-deadline time again shortly, but for the moment, I'm feeling a bit guilty about not…

I've also written a YA novel -- an intense, coming-of-age, male-bonding, werewolf-with-a-difference
story, inspired, many many years ago, by the movie
Teen Wolf. The idea of someone coming to realize he was a werewolf, and
his father was a…
