What do I want?

Sometimes I think I don't really want to be published at all. I read the horror stories about publishing and publicity, reviews and remainders, and I wonder why I'm doing this at all. What is so important to me about seeing my fiction published? Why am I sitting here praying just to be shortlisted for the contest I entered my novel in?

It's not because I think people who look at me as a loser will realize I'm not. A friend wisely pointed out once that people who think you're a loser…

THE FOLLOWER by Jason Starr

I've been a fan of Jason Starr's fiction since reading his stories in various anthologies and his novel Twisted City. Two weeks ago I won an ARC of his latest novel, due in stores August 2007.

The Follower centers on Katie Porter, twenty-two, from Lenox, Mass. determined to

prove to herself and her parents she can make it in New York City.

Katie's idea of making it includes finding the right… Continue

An Offer You Shouldn't Refuse - Allan Guthrie

Well, obviously, it's not ACTUALLY the lovely Sunshine himself. For starters, I don't think Mrs Sunshine would approve and besides...would you REALLY want to wake up each morning and find him there with you? You might find yourself preferring the horse's head (I'm tempted to add "rather than the horse's arse", but I shall restrain myself).

No, this is an altogether different offer. Waterstones bookshop in the UK has an unbelievable bargain on at the moment where they are offering…

New mystery line at NAL

Penguin's New American Library division is adding a new imprint, Obsidian Mysteries, which will now house all of NAL's mystery titles. NAL has published mysteries for years, and publisher Kara Welsh said, "This seemed like the perfect time to bring them all together under one imprint." Set to officially launch in the fall with its first hardcover originals, including Alison Gaylin's Trashed in September followed by Jessica Fletcher and Donald Bain's Murder She Wrote: Panning for Murder, in… Continue

Harrogate News

Natasha Cooper sent me word this morning that Peter Temple will not be able to attend Harrogate this July. We'll be updating that in the online Harrogate article in the new issue of Spinetingler. These things do happen, and I know from my own experience how hard it is for the program chair, who not only has to face their own disappointment but feels bad…

After Lyon

Back from the Quais du Polar festival. Too frazzled yesterday to post anything about it, but now I can officially report to you that it was top notch. A really magnificent festival, well organised and well attended by people in the know. Obviously it helped that the festival was free, which meant you got half the citizens of Lyon coming through for a gander. And what a nice bunch they are. Even the bloke who told me off for changing the traditional…

End Animal Cruelty-- non-writing related....

I was sent a link by a friend. It was a video showing the cruelty of Iam's to dogs, made by a Peta undercover member who was sent to spy on Iam's and get the inside scoop of their cruelty to animals and the unnecessary testing. The video is disturbing.

They force feed dogs vegetable oil by cramming a tube down their throats, (why???) cut muscle from their thighs (another why???) and throw them on a cold, concrete floor, and stack them in cages for 23 1/2…

R.I.P. Donald Hamilton

I

know that it's just a matter of that I'm getting older, and that I

discovered these guys rather late in their lives, but all of my favorite

writers are dying, and it's tearing me up.

Especially Donald Hamilton.

I can clearly remember the first Matt Helm novel I ever read. I found a copy of The Ambushers in a pile of old books in my parents' basement, and it looked both… Continue

Donald Hamilton, 1916-2006

Just read the news over at Mystery*File that Donald Hamilton is gone.

So damn sad. I went through a serious Hamilton phase in Fall 2001,

where I tracked down and devoured the first dozen Matt Helm adventures,

back to back. I'm pretty sure it was Ed Gorman who said that JFK was a

weenie because he preferred James Bond to Matt Helm; I'm inclined to

agree. Forget the Dean Martin movies; look at the original novels.… Continue

One Last Arc of The Concrete Maze

I have one last ARC of The Concrete Maze, and I figured I'd make it available here on Crimespace. If you're reading this and would like to take a look, leave a message here that says "Send me the ARC" or some such. No points for creativity. In a couple of days, (Which is two days for those of you in Metric countries) I'll put names in a hat. Many will go in, only one will come out. (Of course, there's the strong possibility no one will want to enter this little…

An Apologetic Rejection?

I've never received an apology for a rejection before. I wonder if the pros out there have any opinions on this being legit or--- something else?

Either way, it makes my rejection Hall of Fame.

Bringing The Passion

Former Assistant US Attorney Michele Martinez blogs about the passion she had for her crime-busting job, and how she sublimates it in her legal thriller series here: http://thelipstickchronicles.typepad.com/the_lipstick_chronicles/2007/04/do_the_right_th.html

Me, my only former job worth talking about is writing over 40 romance novels. (Hey, you can earn a good living at…

Why We Do It: Murderati at One Year

A couple of weeks ago, I wanted to cry. I'd just learned that two valued members of Murderati planned to leave. This made me so sad.

After almost a year of hard work, I started to question blogging.

Believe me, it takes mucho energy to come up with engaging topics, to write and…

Between Books...

Well, I finished up the Lansdale over the weekend and, while I liked it, I felt a bit disappointed. A couple of loose threads were left hanging at the end, very uncharacteristic of what I've read of Lansdale before. I immediately started on the Robert Crais book, The Watchman: A Joe Pike Novel and finished that on Saturday, diving into Adrian McKinty's The Bloomsday Dead, which I finished Sunday. Both great books--fast-moving, gritty, violent. I really don't read that fast,… Continue

Noir Music

Now that Daniel has helped this technical numpty with how to upload videos, I have decided that every couple of days I will update a couple of videos from some of my favourite Scottish artists (and some other lesser known favourites. So far...punk band The Skids' INTO THE VALLEY from 1979, new Dundee Band The View with Superstar Tradesman, Jesus and Mary Chain's APRIL SKIES from 1987 and all girl Glaswegian rock band The Hedrons with HEATSEEKER.

And, as a special for today, a band who…

Slings and Arrows

Writing can be a tough business.

No, don't worry, I'm not looking for (or expecting) any sympathy, especially not from you lot!
But it does seem to be one of those professions where, perhaps a bit like acting or even running your own business, you have to endure…
