New Novel Releases for the Week of Jan.18th,2011

I am finally getting back in the swing of things and getting back to putting this part of the week together. I did enjoy my time off, but it is time to get serious. To touch on a few bases here, we are going to be doing things a bit differently here @ The Scoop. One of the notable things is that when we are fortunate to get an interview with an author, I would appreciate some help with the questions. Why not? You read some of the same novels and books I do; take a shot at asking…

Robert Crais The Sentry

Am I a sucker for a Joe Pike novel or what? Yes I am and like many of you I marked the release date on my calendar and waited patiently to get my hands on it. I buzzed through it and, well, let me just hold off on my thoughts for a little bit. Let’s get to what is inside the covers first:

“Dru Rayne and her uncle fled to L.A. after Hurricane Katrina; but now, five years later, they face a different danger. When Joe Pike witnesses Dru's uncle beaten by a protection gang, he offers his…

Vintage Vegas - back in the mob days

Well, this isn't exactly about mystery or crime, but my column in today's Las Vegas edition of Examiner.com, Spotlight: Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown: Learning from Las Vegas, features a really fun vintage Vegas video that I thought you might enjoy.…

When the Kindle will be No More!

Last night I watched The Book of Eli on Netflix. It was about a man who must walk across the US in a post apocalyptic period in which a great war has ravaged the world, decimating its populations. What's also apparently happened is that books were burned. Lots of them. Especially Bibles and all manners of scripture no matter their religion, since it was religion that sparked the great final conflict in the first place. Go figure.

There is only one more King James Bible left on the…

When a publisher accepts your book!

Sarah Glenn wanted to grow up to be Kolchak, but would settle for Scully. She did, however, grow up to be a talented novelist and in today's blog she shares one of the most moving moments in any writer's life at ttp://ascamacho.blogspot.com

E-readers, Kindle, and Nook--Oh, My!

I belong to several on-line chat groups for authors (probably too many). The gist of what's going on is that authors are catching on to the e-book revolution, some reluctantly, some anxiously, some willingly. It's scary, because a lot of things change with e-books.

For example: you don't need an agent to publish an e-book. You don't even need a publisher, if you're willing to do some homework. There isn't that assurance that some of us need that we've got professionals behind us. Then… Continue

John Locke Lethal People

What constitutes the elements of a good read for you? Do you need to have a gigantic seven foot, disfigured, complex hero type? Aggressive and violent mob bosses? An ex-wife that totally hates the main character? A quadriplegic midget who wants to dominate the world and has dreadlocks that hang to the ground? A main character that is an assassin for Homeland Security and also does work on the side? Wait, how about a group of trampoline using knife throwing circus midgets? I forgot to mention…

Choosing a location for the setting of a crime novel

I wrote the following article for the Crime Writers' Association (CWA) Debut Dagger Award to help those entering for the competition, and thought it might interest readers of my blog here on Crimespace. The Debut Dagger is open to anyone who has not yet had a novel published commercially. All shortlisted entrants will receive a generous selection of crime novels and professional assessments of their entries. The…

HAVE THEM EATING OUT OF YOUR HANDOUTS

One of the complaints I often hear from authors is that they can't seem to get their signings and book info into the pubic eye through the local newspapers. I don't have that problem and I have taught several organizations in my area a few ideas on how this is accomplished.

I once was a lowly paid newspaper reporter. I remember days of looking for feature pieces to fill up the pages and…

Two Wonderful Reviews for Deadly Currents!

I'm tickled pink--and red and yellow and orange (fireworks colors!)--to announce that I've received two wonderful reviews for my March 8 release, Deadly Currents, the first book in my RM Outdoor Adventures mystery series.

The first is from Publishers Weekly. Here's the first line:

"This enjoyable first in a new cozy series from Groundwater (To… Continue

THE FIRES OF THE GODS has gone on sale in the U.S.

I tried for a cover image, but the new system balks (the add-image screen is partially covered up). Why do I have such problems with this?

The release times of my books apparently no longer rely on the dates set by my publisher.  THE FIRES OF THE GODS went on sale in the UK in December (as planned).  The U.S. edition was not scheduled to go on sale until April, but here it is already.  Amazon has started shipping.

This appears to be my last book, fans…

Chapter One of my new Al Pennyback mystery, "A Good Day to Die"

March 24, Oakland, CA

The sun, just rising, made the hills around San Francisco look like green jewels, and the Golden Gate Bridge gleamed in the early morning light, as the Christina B out of Hong Kong made her way slowly through the bay, heading for a dock at Oakland terminal.

Captain Chow Hung Fat, a slender Chinese with close-cropped iron gray hair, felt every one of his sixty years as he stood at the front of the wheelhouse, watching the…

The Kindle and the (Ladies) Book Club!

I was invited to be the guest author at a local ladies book club this past week. I don't mean "ladies" in a demeaning or male chauvinist sort of way. By "ladies" I just mean that no men are invited to this particular book club. And because no men are invited the ladies like to dress up the way they want, drink what they want (and a lot of it!), and chat loudly about whatever they want, whether it…

An Object in Motion postponed until March...

Due to issues beyond my control, meaning not on the part of Rey Books, the release of An Object in Motion has been pushed back until March. But there is a plan set in place to make up the delay to the Readers.

Go to www.reybooks.com and check on the Author Blog section for the full story.

Thank you,

RSB

Death and all that crap.

So, my sister died...and now my brother is having major cancer operation this coming week.  The guy who was my closest pal since I was 15 suddenly died a couple weeks ago, and I look in the mirror and see some 63 year old man who looks more like my uncles than how I look in my mind. Anyone else have this "how did I suddenly become old?" issue?
