Packing, packing

Today is packing day. Two of my daughters and I leave for London tomorrow. I'm hoping the airport situation has become a little less fraught. We'll be staying in a rented flat in London for just over two weeks, and I'll be up at the Harrogate Crime Festival from the 18th to the 22. Anyone else going to be there?

All I want is time to finish reading Harry Potter Half Blood Prince ahead of the release of Book 7 - I am, indeed, an HP fan!

Short Stories

I enjoy writing short stories, although there isn't much market for them. I do have one in the latest online edition of crime and suspense ( www.crimeandsuspense.com). It is entitled THE SHORT STORY. I also enjoy the rather antiquated forms, novellas and novelettes. I have one or the other available for forty-nine cents on Amazon Shorts. The title is The Treasure of Sir Thomas Conway. Believe me, it is worth every penny of that 49 cents!!!

Noir City Northwest, Report #1

Eddie Muller kicked off the Northwest debut of his Noir City film festival with an observation. He’d stopped in for a drink at a nearby watering hole and noted:

A. One (1) sexy bartender

B. One (1) gorgeous woman drinking alone

C. Two (2) guys in jeans and tennis shoes deep in conversation about computer peripherals.

Seattle, he decided, needs some film noir.

Rosemarie and I did our bit.…

Dog Days

My eighteen-month old pup, Ruby, is a better killer than any I have yet to manufacture. She acts without hesitation, commits to every effort and never displays guilt or morale conflict. Last month’s rabbit picked the wrong corner of the yard for an exit. Tuesday’s chipmunk stayed too long at the bird feeder. July 4, that grackle just misjudged an excited yellow lab’s vertical leap. As the bodies pile up, I‘m stuck…

Three Qualities of the Best PR Pros

by Pari Noskin Taichert

Any novelist will tell you: Flashes of true creativity are few and far between. The real stuff of successful storytelling and prose comes in the daily butt-in-the-chair exercise of drafting, writing, editing, refining, editing and editing again.

The same holds true for PR. It's hard work. At its core, public relations is about…

I Will Be Installing Nitrous Oxide in My New House

I came back from my NYC business/pleasure trip determined to make all those appointments I have put off thanks to book writing and my wonderful, don't-you-wish-you-could-have-it-too, Lyme disease. Finishing the last book took a lot out of me, but I am doing better now. Until I called the new dentist Monday and they said they could take care of that loose crown Tuesday morning. "Are you sure?" I said after I gulped down a mouthful of my heart. "Because I can wait. Honest." But no. They did…

Dance on His Grave by Sylvia Dickey Smith

Just published in May 2007, this red hot Mystery/Suspense novel is getting great reviews!

L&L Dreamspell is excited about Sylvia's work, and pleased to tell you that the sequel to this novel will be out in November 2007 - Wow! This is her "Third Eye" mystery series and features a wonderful main character called Sidra Smart - a rookie private eye.

I enjoyed creating the cover for this novel - it has so many elements from the story. Below you'll find a brief synopsis from the…

I'm New! Welcome to my Crimespace page

Hello everyone! I'm new to the Ning network, and I'd like to tell you about myself. My name is Linda Houle and I live in the Houston, Texas area, USA.

In early 2006 Lisa Rene' Smith and I started L&L Dreamspell, what I like to call a "micro-publishing company" - that also means "small press!"

We decided we'd like to handle everything for our own books, then go on to publish works by other talented authors. We're certainly well on our way now in 2007, and growing…

Honeymoon for Three is out

My new suspense novel, HONEYMOON FOR THREE, is out. Told from 3 POVs, it features the bride, the groom and the stalker who has a bellybutton fetish. It takes place in some of the most beautiful areas in the Western United States, including national parks and the northern California coast. And let's not forget about Reno and Seattle, although I don't know whether anybody ever called them beautiful. Suspense takes a thrill ride.

Look for it!

Happy Day.

Book Flix?

I'm not sure if this is bad news for writers, but I may have found the answer for all my friends who tell me they love to read but don't have another square inch on their bookshelves at home. If you once found movie DVDs crowding you out of your home, you have probably discovered Netflix by now. Booksfree - http://www.booksfree.com/ - does the same thing for paperbacks and audio books. They have more than 96,000 titles, shipping is free both ways and,… Continue

Houston, We Have An Editor!

posted by Jeanne Munn Bracken

Over 20 years ago, I got the call that every writer dreams about. An editor at Oxford University Press was interested in publishing my Children with Cancer: A Reference Guide for Parents. I did the happy dance all over the place. Her name was Shelley Reinhardt, and over the next couple of years we polished off the book and sent it out into the world, where it garnered very nice reviews and is still sort of in print. I drifted into fulltime library…

Why Mysteries?

I asked this question in another forum, but never got a satisfactory answer. What draws us to read mysteries?

For me, mysteries, and particularly mystery series, are the literary equivalents of comfort food. Having a bad day, pick up a mystery. Need to forget that the bills-to-be-paid column is longer than the deposit history on your bank account will ever be? A mystery hits the spot. A mystery and a heaping bowl of extra cheesy mac and cheese, but we won't go there right…
